How to confirm DME failure?
Hi everyone,
I have a 2013 F30 335i and just replaced the Valvertronic actuator, during the reprogramming/run-in phase using a code scanner, the process stopped and wouldn't complete. The car ran and idled smoothly for about 5 min before I initiated the run-in phase, but has since developed a bad misfire now. I don't believe it's a fuel issue, the valve cover isn't leaking, battery is in good shape, plugs/coils are 2 weeks old (and ran properly prior to the Valvetronic actuator replacement) and everything are seemingly connected back properly. With the misfire, the run-in phase stops pretty much immediately after 2-5 cycles. I brought it into a trusted BMW garage and the first thing the owner said was a damaged DME and that needs to be replaced. They will try to diagnose it more but is there a way to confirm that it's the DME itself? I'm obviously hesitant to go down that route since getting a new unit installed is about $3,500 CAD. If I can confirm it's a bricked DME, I think I'll get it sent out to a place like RPM Motorsport to be repaired instead of getting a new one cloned. I can do light repairs myself but to diagnose this is beyond my abilities. Thanks in advance everyone. |

I would check the N55 tech section for similar threads. I've seen some on failed DMEs and/or valvetronic issues. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...421&order=desc

Thanks for your reply. Turns out the DME was fine, a timing solenoid failed while I was doing the run in phase for the Valvetronic actuator. Good timing I guess.
