2018 4x4 oil replacement
Just dropped off my 2018 X 3.5 at the dealer for some white smoke filling my garage. Smelled like something was burning. Anyway, the rep recommended changing all the oil in the X which is called the 4x4 service package. Tran, differential oil etc. Cost is $1800. What is everyone’s experience with this cost. The X has 99.5k miles. I have a few more miles left until 100k BMW extended warranty runs out.
Of course if nothing has failed on the X, nothing is covered under the warranty. Is there any advise if I can send to the rep to look at if there doing some repair work? |

$1.8K for a "4x4" package seems pricy to me. Technically, it's not a 4x4 system it's an all wheel drive system.
To keep a standard gear (not ///M diffs) oil service into perspective below is parts list (OE vs BMW):
I'd ask for a very detailed list, line by line, of what is included in the 4x4 service. Worth noting the entire service is DIY, but the transmission is the only item that has specific procedures. Front diff, transfer case, and rear diff combined are on par if not easier than an oil change. |

Tell them you'll consider their 4X4 ($X$) service once they've addressed the warranty issue.
Then shop around with other dealerships and independent service shops. |

I would for sure recommend to change the fluids ... 100K miles is the recommendation from ZF. Also it will help in case something happens specially as you said about some white smoke.
Certainly substantially more expensive than DIY. They always use OEM parts so transmission oil pan is certainly 2-3x more expensive than OE and transmission oil is like $65 per liter instead of $17 ... the OEM service for transmission only is already $500 more than ZF parts. Potentially they are charging ~50% labor. |

Ok, it sounds like I got shafted!
So for the front and rear differential and transfer case was $922. The transmission flush was an additional $907. They didn’t find anything wrong as far the white smoke or any oil leaking. They did recommend going with another extended warranty at $6375 through fidelity. The gold plan with a deductible of $500 for 36 month. Not sure really. So far this X has been pretty good. No real issues. |

Sorry to be harsh, but it’s true. You needed a valve cover gasket and you still will if they didn’t repair it. The service writers are 100% paid on commission. They are not your friend. |
