I just bought the book, "The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy."
Very good book, a highly recommended one for those who love the trilogy as much as I do. Nolan is a genius, and his focus on the tiny detail is rarely seen from directors. For example, questions such as "Why does the scarecrow wear a mask?" and "Why are batman's ears so long?" bothered him greatly. So he had to come up with reasons for those.
In case you forgot, the scarecrow mask acted as a gas mask and batman's ears are antennas. These were not detailed in the comics or in any of the previous films.
