There are hundreds of ways to die, in SA or the US and in SA dying in a carjacking is certainly not the most common way to go.
South Africa does have a high crime rate, but does not stop people from driving nice cars and having fun in them.
Just yesterday I had a 'breakfast run' to the picturesque Cape Point with a bunch of E30 BMWs, 325i, 325iS and 333i's (the E30 BMW being one of the more popular hijack vehicles) and we had a ball. No hassles, no worries.
People blow things out of proportion.

It only takes
once to get "blown out of proportion...." that is, it only takes one bullet to end you're life. If you're the one getting shot through the noggin', who cares about media hysteria. The murder rates in SA are massive.
