OK, so for the exercise let's assume the e46 premium, at ~ 1.33x the highest spec 3 coupe is too narrow, and up it to 1.4x.

A base 335i is ~ $41k * 1.4 = $57,400. Maybe BMW USA expects to get a bit more, but I think that given the lower base spec of the US M3 that would be a mistake, especially if they want to maintain scale.

As others above have posted, once you add in a few options it's easy even @ $60k to get this car to high 60's - awfully close to some great competition.
