It all depends on the market you're in. From what I've observed on this forum, it seems markets like Seattle and San Francisco are difficult for big discounts. If you're in one of those areas, then you may have to take what you get or be prepared to shop in another region, like Portland or Southern California respectively.
Nevertheless, if there's another BMW dealer even within 50 miles (or whatever your tolerance is) you definitely should cross-shop. You can always bring the car to your closest dealer for maintenance regardless of where you buy.
