Was definitely in park because if it wasn't it would have immediately rolled, even in neutral.

ky0u is right, when you turn off the car, it automatically goes into park. It even goes into park if you are under a certain speed and you open the driver side door.

I'm 100% certain it was in N, shut off with the brake pedal applied and subsequently applied further or reapplied after the engine was shut off. As the residual brake pressure bled off, away it went as the 35min Auto P position inhibit timer was active. The car wasn't locked when retrieved from the street was it?
