I've used both Hydes Rustopper and DryCoat Rust Preventative to spray on the wet rotors after washing the car. They help a bit, it's not perfect since you only spray the outside of the rotors. (Note: I have not tried Bilthamber Atom Mac, but I would think any spray would have the same limitation). It definitely cuts down on the orange dust that is transferred to the black finish of wheels.
Personally, I hate the idea of driving 1-2 miles, especially when the roads are crap in winter time or the air is filled with pollen, road is dusty, etc. I typically wash/dry and move the car back into the garage. If the roads are pristine and clean, I think that is the best full proof method.
Since I don't drive my car often, I usually use the spray and park my car. After the first drive I go over the wheels again with a dry microfiber.
