The smell depends on how accurate the tune that is applied is in handling closed-loop operation. My Caterham was delivered as a factory car in 2012 with no cat, as the specific regulations it was sold in Canada under didn’t require one.

The idle and half throttle and below operation to 5,000RPM are all closed loop and accurately hit Lambda 1.00 +/- 0.02, giving no noticeable smell. Full throttle to 8,200RPM tapers to 0.86 Lambda under open loop Alpha-N conditions (high compression naturally aspirated engine), but combustion is complete and the car is moving at speed under those conditions, so also no detectable smell.
