I'm always fascinated that the Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million light years away, is about 152,000 light years across, and can be seen as a tiny smudge with the naked eye on moonless nights. It will collide with the Milky Way in 4-5 billion years, although it is likely no damage will occur as the distance between objects is so great.

For all we know the stars in the Andromeda galaxy could have been eaten by some advanced alien species piece by piece, and we would not learn that in our lifetimes or for millions of years, unless the aliens can travel a thousand times the speed of light. But probably not.
