What I expected from 2025 cars 25 years ago was totally configurable displays: it’s technically not a big deal and display tech has made it even easier. The car’s owner puts instruments, dials and buttons where they want them to go on the display area and select what sort of controls they have. And as they swap cars the setup moves with them. And if you want your display and controls to look like a 2020 model, then you can set it up that way. But 25 years after mock-ups of curved display surfaces and completely configurable instruments, basically, we’re still at the mercy of what some 30yo designer who only learnt to drive 12 years ago thinks people should want.
