Between my 18" wheels and M Performance brakes, there's no room for my hand either between the caliper and barrel so I do this too. I wear gloves so the dust shields don't cut my hand to hell. About once a month I'll take the wheels off to thoroughly clean them. I use a $30 motorcycle wheel stand to hold and spin them.
