You're lucky that your cat stays in your yard. Many cats that are allowed outdoors wander outside of their immediate yard. While cats often instinctively know their way home, they can wander further and get lost, often getting distracted and wandering off. Some cats may even establish territories that extend beyond their immediate yard, potentially traveling several miles. Then there's the possibility of being attacked by other animals, and can be injured or even killed, and can also pick up diseases from other animals. I had several die years ago from feline leukemia that they got from other cats that were strays or were let out, especially at night. Cats love to roam around at night.
