If he's explaining what I think he's explaining, he was probably executing what we call a "Michigan left" where, at a major divided intersection (right off the top of my head I'm thinking State and Eisenhower in Ann Arbor for example), you can't turn left, so you have to turn right, then U through the median back through that same light. I can see what he's trying to say now... Maybe he wasn't actually executing that maneuver, but I get it. I think.
