Wireless Android Auto requires both Bluetooth connection to the smartphone and Wifi-Direct 5GHZ connection to the smartphone.
The 5 Ghz frequency must be supported and enabled by the Wifi-Direct Hardware which is part of the BMW head-unit.
I used to just connect by Bluetooth and had Android Auto cutting out. Following Iggi's post, I connect both by Bluetooth and Wifi and have since covered over 700 miles in multiple journeys. Only once has it cut out and that was in a known mobile phone black spot so hardly surprising.
Try this if you are not already doing so. It is working for me.
