BMW Z4 M40i - Sometimes Start Ignition Issue

Hello Fellow BMW'ers,

I just leased a 2025 BMW z4 m40i for about a month now and I recently had this happen twice... but not all the time. Please excuse me as I do not know any correct automotive terminology to make this easier for you guys to read. Here is how it goes:

I step on the brake, press "start" ignition button, it makes that usual booting up sound, but then it doesn't complete the full cycle and does not completely boot up the car.

I have to do the whole step on brake, press "start" button all over again so that it can boot up.

Not sure if this is important or something I should mention as well that may contribute to my worry - sometimes the car starts immediately when I click "start". Sometimes it skips a little and then completely boots up.

--

I mentioned this to the dealership I bought from, and they said it has something to do with "Air suspensions". Here is what they said word for word:

"It has air suspension. The shocks release when you stop the car and park and once you restart the car to go, they fill up again, so they raise the car up a little bit. Air shocks."

Hello.

The car's user manual is a valid source of terminology to start with. Words have certain meanings for a reason which is conveying the sense. If you can't say it they fail to understand. If you mean the engine doesn't start reliably there can be various reasons, ignition related as well. Take the car to the service and show them what your concern is. If you fail to show it as well (you say it doesn't happen often yet) they can read errors that should be stored in the car's memory. Just don't use voice commands to avoid overflowing the car's memory with errors (it's a joke!).

BMW makes different cars. This is a general purpose forum. You should take model specific questions to the dedicated forum here (fellow users can also understand you better ): https://g29.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=709.

ignition

I don't see how ignition issues would be related to air suspension. Air suspension uses air springs instead of traditional coils to adjust ride height and provide a smoother ride. These air springs are filled with compressed air, and the system uses an onboard air compressor, an electronic control unit (ECU), and height sensors to manage the air pressure and maintain the desired vehicle height. The system can automatically adjust based on driving conditions and vehicle load.
I think you should press the brake and press the ignition button for few seconds before releasing the button. If that doesn't work, then you need to see your service technician.

Good point. Maybe I do have to press it longer. I just press it and release, and assume it would start up completely.

I have never had an issue with my Z4. I hold my foot on the brake, press the start button and release my foot from the brake once I hear the roar of my M40i's engine.
