They planned this car ~4 years ago when they thought a baby SUV would be just the thing for big-ol, home equity leveraged Americans (instead of the 1 series hatches). Now they're trying to make lemonade from a lemon.
I have no clue why C&D calls this a "First Drive" review when it just seems like a press release and there's no mention at all on how it actually drives. It will be interesting to see how this fits into the market in terms of features, size and price.

Much more likely that they intended to fill the European SUV craving while getting good enough mileage to make it finacially possible for them, and the US version is just a byproduct. Europeans want SUVs, they just can't handle the poor fuel economy as well as Americans can because of the higher prices. |

xDrive30i fuel economy is still quite poor consider it's a 2011 model! BMW needs to revamp the engine with direct injection, include 7-speed transmission, lighten the X1 weight even more. EPA city/highway would be more desirable around 22/30 mpg to even begin to attract buyers in 2011.

NO ONE outside BMW have driven the X1 . The only X1 drives are related to the Prototype drives in Mallorca , Spain. NO ONE has got behind the wheel of a production car yet.

Where are you getting those numbers? The EPA Ratings? They'll offer a completely different range of engines in Europe you know?

I got the X3 numbers from BMWUSA website and the X1 numbers from this post. BMW always offers smaller engines in Europe so I would expect X1 will be no exception but I don't think they will go below the 18d that is currently offered for X3 in Europe and puts out 143hp. The same size engine in X1 will probably improve mileage due to smaller size of the vehicle but I doubt the improvement will be more than 10-12% at most. Considering European taxes and premiums on luxury brand cars and the culture, I doubt that 10-12% higher or lower fuel cost is a major financial factor to a prospetcive BMW customer in Europe.

The fuel economy numbers they're using for the X1 are just an estimate. We can wait and see after the first year's sales, but I'll bet this vehicle sells better in Europe than the US. BMW's attempts at going down market in the US have never been a huge success, and I doubt this one will be any different. |

The next iteration of the X3 is going to be bigger than the current one, and the net X5 will move up from medium SUV to full-size. The X1 is smaller than the current X3, and with the new X3 upsizing, the difference between the two is gonna be bigger.. Still why bother making the X3 and X5 even bigger? Nobody asked for that...

In my opinion, this vehicle only makes sense, however, if it comes with a diesel. Otherwise, there is no point. Get an X3. |
