Trailer Recommendations?

I have a 2025 X3 with a factory installed trailer hitch. I wish to purchase a “landscaper” type trailer. My main reason is to haul branches, debris, leaves, logs to the local town dump. Maybe to haul an occasional snow blower and kayak.

I realize there are good quality ones and bad quality ones. I want a small sized good quality one that will last for many years without rusting. So I’m willing to pay a little more than the cheap quality stuff at Tractor Supply or Home Depot. Any advice?

For what little amount of use it's going to see it sounds like either one of them will work. Tractor supply rents their utility trailers, how about doing that as it's one less item to insure and paying for a plate.

Don't buy from any big box store, they are overpriced.
Find a local place that manufactures/sells trailers, We have many locally built trailers.

Renting a trailer is usually a pain in the ass. When you need one, it's just another thing to deal with.

Where are you going to store it? This was the biggest issue for me, I didn't have a big open area to store it, and my HOA would lose their minds of I tried.

I went with a harbor freight folding trailer for like $400. It's weight limit is fairly low, around 1000 pounds, but they have one with slightly more capacity. I can fold it up and store it in my garage or in my utility area.

Outside of that, go aluminum. It doesn't rust. It's lighter..the trailers hold value better. Better all around.

Good advice. I didn’t think about renting. I have about 2 acres of land and there’s no place to dump clippings, tree branches, leaves, and stuff like that. The local town dump is only 1 mile away, so I need a trailer for occasional back and forth to the dump. Messy yard stuff. Plus, I’ll probably use it for hauling kayaks and a snow blower. Even furniture. So I think I want to own it. Storing it in my backyard isn’t problem.

I’m interested in an all-aluminum Aluma 4 ft x 6 ft for $2,1000….

I doubt you'd make it to the dump with anything left on that trailer...

With 2 acers you should have room for a compost pile. Get this instead:

Honestly, a compost pit is a super useful thing to have. Throw all your organic waste in, eventually you get super nice dirt out. A wonder of nature.

I will bet in 2 years from now you will use the trailer 1/3 of the frequency that you are thinking. License, tires, wheel bearings, blah blah.

The trailer you linked is a flimsy toy.

You can rent the proper tool for the job, 100% of the time. Large or small, enclosed or open. You can have whatever you want without buying or maintaining or storing it. The time to book, pick up and return the rental is far less than the time to faff around with trailer ownership.

I think you are going to want a small dump trailer based on the above. These get heavy quickly, and have more systems than a basic trailer so are more expensive and heavy to maintain.

You could look at utility trailers, but those won't work well for the primary use case of trips to the dump.

I would consider getting something with sides to make it easier to haul clippings, etc.. You may also want to go to a 4ft x8ft. Allows you to haul a sheet of dry wall or plywood. I have a 4x8 with sides and it provides more flexibility and ease with different types of loads now and in the future. Buy quality… for longevity.

Yup, I agree. With the trailer shown in the picture, I can buy sides to add on and later remove. How cool is that? Notice the slots on the side. I know the 4 x 6 is small, but it should suit my needs. For any oversized object, I suppose I can get creative with a bunch of bungee cords.

Not aluminum, but galvanized steel. Weighs just 451 pounds. Looks to be what function you want.

This is a pretty popular utility trailer. It folds up.

Rent it from U-Haul with some discounts and turn it back in when finished. I wouldn't want the burden of having an empty trailer lying around since you won't be using it every week, I'm assuming.

I understand having an extra sports car or motorcycle, but an empty trailer seems boring and lifeless.

I used to rent mine from U-Haul when I used to trailer one of my sports cars to the track once in a while. It worked out okay, but it can be a lot of work either way.

Why don't you just pay the landscaping guys to haul off your excess branches and yard tree stuff instead?

I wouldn't want to deal with it but that's just me.

this same trailer is available thru tractor supply network Interesting as it's two different sizes 4.5x7.5 at TS and 5x7 at landmark Lowes lists at at 4.5x7.5

Depending on how rural you are a chipper and Compost and mix sand in with periodical makes great top soil. I cleared all the under growth and vines that surround my previous property the first year. the pile I had was huge and I rented a large chipper from True Value made a huge difference.

I checked U-Haul and a trailer fit for carrying branches (4 x 7 feet) to the recycle center is about $15 before the usual add on expenses. This is way cheaper than buying a trailer and I don’t have to store or license it.

Since I will only do this a couple times a year, this is what I will do.

How does one own two acres and not have space for organic material? We own .2 acres and we have a compost pile. We also have a weekly brown bucket collection for compost material. We use that for the overflow and weeds.

for those considering an Aluma trailer, they are awesome. solid, light, well built, work great. I have had two of their motorcycle trailer.

new is always nice, but you can save a lot by buying used.

Consider used one - perhaps ask your local nextdoor ?

I was lucky - my neighbor just gave me his to use one time, then once more and finally said I should keep it

I rebuild lighting completely.

I stays outside, painted steel and plywood - 4 seasons with heavy snowfall.

Thanks everyone for the responses. All good advice. What’s funny is there is a U-Haul rental place 1 mile from my house. I drive by it every day. So maybe I’ll consider that.

Yea, although I have 2 acres, I can create a compost pile, but I choose not to. If I do one, it would be directly next to my neighbors property and I’m thinking they might not like it. Plus, my properly is mostly lawn, so it would stand out like a sore thumb. There’s no place to hide it.
