Half Engine Light! NO BT TOOL! JB3 HELP!!
I was going to my college half bumper to bumper traffic and half 40-60mph. i was doing 60mph and suddenly i get a half engine light and loose power. it seemed as if my turbos stopped working. im not sure if this is limp mode or not. i was still able to accelerate to 60 mph and make it to school.
(already running late) i turned off the car put the key back in and held the petal for 4 seconds to set the jb3 to map 0. i started the car and the light was not there... i didnt drive the car becasue i was 15 minutes late to class... i dont have a BT tool! what should i do!! i will update after i drive it again after class. i am under warrantee and its a 07 335i coupe jb3 Map5 mods in sig sorry for the long post! i need some comments

Without scanning the car it's just guessing which will not tell you much.
The fact that you did not see a CEL when you restarted the car had probably nothing to do with JB3 as some codes disappear from the dash (not from the memory) when you shut the car down. |

do you think i can just take the jb3 out and take it to the dealer? or will the codes tell the dealer i was tuned?
is the BT tool the only tool that can scan read and clear codes? can the unites most mechanics have do the job? such as snapon ect.

You won't know what it is until you scan. I got the 1/2 engine light and limp mode a month ago and it turned out to be some DSC module errors. I was just driving lightly at the time (max boost was around 4psi for my trip) and it was the first time I took the car out in freezing temps. I cleared the codes and it never came back.

Have you experienced any long cranks or other symptoms of a filed HPFP? That happened once to me, code scanned by my independent was a fule pressure code but never happened again so I never took it in?

The code is gone from the dash but in the ECU which would need to be scanned/cleared before taking it to the dealer just to be safe. Doesn't sound like a tune related code but nobody can figure out what it is without a scan. The car is fine as once you restart power will/is back to normal.
See if you can find someone with a BT tool, an independent shop that can scan the car, or invest in one for yourself (you can click on my sig for details). Its a great tool to have in the garage and IMO a must with any tune for just this reason. Mike |

no i havent had any long cranks or hpfp issues.
can other tools scan read and clear codes also? or only a BT. my uncle is a private mechanic and he has a few scanners and i was wondering if these did the same thing as the BT tool. i will be driving to work in about 15 minutes so i will update you guys. i will set it to map 3 and drive it to work. thanks for you suggestions so far guys. EDIT: if i clear the codes then how will the dealer know what to do. they seem to like following codes only. so if i end up clearing the codes and nothing pop's back up i have nothing to worry about?

It doesn't have to be the BT tool, but I am not familiar with the US market of such devices, so maybe others will chime in. |

You need a BT tool to see the detail of all the BMW modules (cheaper than a GT1). The other scanners are probably just the ODBII emissions code readers. Go to the local forum section and see if someone local would be willing to let you use their BT Tool. |

yep that's your first limp mode.. which happens from time to time, I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again, then get your car scanned..

Unless you can replicate it, I would say that its an isolated incident.Could even be bad gas.

just remember limp mode is an engine safety feature, so don't stress too much.. as mentioned above it could just be an isolated incident.. keep us posted
