Question about Potential Rubbing 235/40/18 Lowered on Dinan Springs
Hey guys, had a quick question, was about to go pick up some VMR V810 18x8.5 ET45 and got worried about potential rubbing issues. I got 12mm spacers from BMS (on their website they say if using with aftermarket wheels, get 12mm instead of 10mm) and was going to put those on the front to have ET33 effectively as most people I see have ET35 in the front. I just read that there have been reports of ppl w/ 35 offset rubbing with 235 tires. this means i'm dead in the water right? Otherwise I should should go to 225 tires or getting smaller spacers?
Any help please! |

I think you will be fine, although my suspension is stock. You're only 2mm further out than my setup, which is 235/35R19, 8", ET35.
In my case, the only situation where I am even close to rubbing is on the INSIDE, where there is about 1mm clearance to the strut when the steering is at full lock. I could come out 10mm and still be within the wheel well. If you zoom in on the front wheel in this image, you can see the clearance. I am considering 5mm spacers myself for an effective ET30. I dont quite get, why your 8j ET35 is that close to the suspension strut.
I know for a fact, that 8.5j ET43 fits just fine at the front, which would be about 14mm closer to the strut than your setup. |

Just after installing my wheels, on uneven ground I could barely get a credit card between the tyre and the strut at full lock. I just went out and had another look on level ground, after several weeks, it's not as tight as I remembered, but there is no way an 8J ET43 would fit, in my case anyway. An 8.5" rim would be hard up against the strut. |

That is strange. VMR sells 8.5j ET43 wheels specifically for the 2 series, because the ET45 doesnt fit.
I attached an image of his 19" x 8.5j ET43 wheel with 225/35 tyre. |

That is a bit odd indeed.
Can the inboard flange of the OZ racing wheels be deeper than the VMRs? It does not look like that could be the case in this picture from a slightly different angle. You've got me needing to go and double check that they did not put the wrong wheel, but with the right tyre, up front. The rear wheel is a 9J ET40. Hmm, that would be suspiciously close to what we're looking at. Surely not? |

I have no explanation for that. Maybe VMRWheels has some information. But if you don't have an 9j ET35, this is pretty much irritating to me. Maybe u dont have an ET35, but ET40+.

Hopefully I can make this much simpler ao as to avoid any confusion! If you currently have 8.5 ET45, all you need is a 3mm spacer in order to run your 235 front tire. The 3mm spacer is used only to clear the suspension. If you run an effective 8.5 ET33 (12mm spacer) with a 235 tire, you'll likely have rubbing issues.

Yes, but apparently, he runs a 8j ET35 wheel with a 235 tyre, which seems too close to the strut. it should have much more clearance, if the named dimension is correct.

I changed over to winter tyres today, and have been able to check the stamp on the inside rim. It's very faint, almost impossible to photograph, but visible to the naked eye in the right light. There was obviously a mistake in the translation from Italien to Swedish to English when I was discussing this order with my supplier. They were adamant that only 8j ET35s were available. I think I was very lucky to not get rubbing on the strut. (I don't, I have tested this on track at >1g). It will be a spacer for me next summer. Last edited by Sonertial; 10-20-2018 at 02:31 AM.. |
