BMW Tire Repair Kit

Does the BMW Tire Repair Kit actually work? Is it a reliable option for a puncture. For some reason BMW doesn’t offer a spare tire option for Canada. I bet they add it as an option for 2024 as I clearly see it is an option for some regions. Also wish the sliding rear seats were an option in Canada. I use the sliding rear seats in my 2016 X1 a lot.

It works okay, but the mechanic responsible for changing your tire after using may not be happy if it's like the Mobility Kit of past models. The inflator has a liquid sealant that plugs the hole, but also coats the tire and inside of the rim with the gunk that can be a pain to clean off. But since we get the spare tire in the US, I can't confirm the contents of the kit. I'm actually just running an inflator and tire plug kit in my car, and removed the spare tire for extra storage.

I wouldn’t have bought the X1 if it didn’t have a spare tire. That said, my experience with those tire inflator kits is awful. And depending on the place you take the car to get the tire changed, you might have to actually replace it cuz many mechanics aren’t fond of fixing the, because of the gook inside.

BMW Canada product planning has something against spare tires, because you can’t get a factory spare on an X3 here either, even though it’s available in the US. And that’s been the case for years, so don’t bet on a change for 2024. At least on the X3 you still have a choice of runflat tires or not, but for the X1 it’s non-RFT only and no spare on top of that.
