1985 BMW 635csi (auto) No Crank Problem
Hey guys, the other morning I could not get my 635 to turn over. The problem was very gradual, would take a couple tries (sometimes first try) before the engine would turn over and start. But after about a week it completely stopped turning over at all. I tested the battery with a multimeter and got a 12.4V reading so I’ve ruled the battery out. What other things should I check/test before I start buying a new ignition switch, starter motor, etc.
The only sound I’m getting is a quick 2 clicks when turning the key. Battery is brand new. Lights all work. |

The battery may not be charging when the car is running and is now too flat to restart the car. Check (or have it checked) the alternator.
It is also possible that the battery cables are not in serviceable shape. Be sure to check them.

Battery voltage can be ok but amperage may be low if there is an internal fault. Do have a battery load tester? Harbor Freight sells one for cheap, the analog one. I have had bad batteries right off the shelf.
I would confirm battery is 100% ok for amperage, charged fully, and then check engine ground. I usually separate the troubleshooting, getting the starting system to work 100% (starter cranks engine over quickly and normally) and then the ignition system (starter turns engine but doesn't start and run). Above decision is kinda hard to tell in this situation. Luckily these older cars can be kinda easy to troubleshoot, at least compared to new cars. If it started and ran recently like in last year or so, it is *probably* something simple like corroded connections or stuck relay. Good luck!! |
