Blue Bay Lagoon Metallic - HD Pics + Things New Buyers should be aware of

Hello BMW Fam-Bam!

I've noticed that there are very limited resources available (as of now) when it comes to BMW's new color: Blue Bay Lagoon Metallic

I work for BMW and I recently had the opportunity to see this color up close and personal and so I decided to take some good high quality photos and post them here for those who are interested in this color!

Also, my first car was a 2015 BMW X1 - sDrive28i and the car I had after my lease was a 2018 BMW X1 - sDrive28i. That said, I will also include a few things that I think that people should be aware of when it comes to the 2023 BMW X1.

WARNING/DISCLAIMER - Blue Bay Lagoon Metallic
* Please note that this color is NOT photo/camera - friendly (i.e., There is a difference when viewing the color in-person vs viewing the color in a photo). That said, YOU NEED to view this color in person as it is definitely a wild color lol.
* NONE of the pictures posted below have been edited and all were taken via iPhone.
* Blue Bay Lagoon Metallic looks very similar to Snapper Rocks Blue Metallic, Atlantis Blue Metallic, and Long Beach Blue Metallic and so you can reference those colors if you like.
*NOTE: Being that Blue is my favorite color and both my X1's were Blue in color, I am biased and if I were to order an X1, it would be in this color haha.

A few things that I believe potential customers (especially those new to the BMW brand) should be aware of when thinking of purchasing a 2023 BMW X1.
*NOTE: All of this is based on the North American Region!

I am just going to list what I think is important and will be numbered based on importance!

1. The ONE THING that will PREVENT me from buying/leasing this car is the fact that there is NO iDrive controller/knob available for the iDrive (Navi) Screen. In other words, it is touch screen ONLY!!!
- This is mainly targeted for current BMW drivers who are used to using the knob/controller to navigate the screen. I constantly find myself having to take my eyes off of the road to navigate around, but I feel I was able to use my prereferral vision when navigating the screen with the knob.
- The screen is relatively SMALL and there is no option for a bigger screen.
- Also, BMW is trending towards having less physical buttons and so you will have to use the Navi Screen to adjust things like the climate control.

2. In my opinion - BMW's STOCK SOUND SYSTEM sounds TERRIBLE!!! I would encourage you to test the sound system WHILE DRIVING, but I think Harman/Kardon Surround Sound is a MUST for my X1.
- And yes it is SURROUND SOUND
- You also get special speakers that illuminate as well!

3. The Ambient Lighting WILL change colors when switching between driving modes - rather you like it or not.
- Example: The ambient lighting, regardless of color, will turn Blue/Green when driving in Eco Mode or Dark Red/Dark Blue when driving in Sport mode.
- I think that this is INCREDIBLY DUMB and I am sure they will have a software update available soon... like BRO - I just want my Ambient Lighting to stay ONE color and that's it.

4. Unlike other BMW models, you CANNOT get a Trailer Hitch with the M-sport package.

5. Heated Seats/Steering Wheel is NOT included in the Convenience or Premium Package and so if this is important to you, make sure you select this option!!

6. The X1 can get pricey real fast and you can easily find yourself in the middle to upper 40K range, which will put you in X3 territory.

That said, I think BMW did a D*MN GOOD JOB with the 2023 X1! The F48 model, in my opinion, was an absolute JOKE and so BMW did a good job maturing the X1! Despite being a small car in size, you do have a relatively high seating position!

The X1 will always have a special place in my heart, being that we have history together! I am sure the things I mentioned above will be worked out as the X1 matures in it's life cycle. I also give BMW grace, being that 2023 was a BIG YEAR for them with the new 7 series model (and yes the stupid ambient lighting will change color based on driving mode in the new 7 as well - smh)

Anyways,

I hope this helps everyone and please feel free to add more pics or other resources to this thread!

Stay safe y'all

You make a good point about the lack of the iDrive controller wheel - I had one on my last car (a series 2 Active Tourer) and yes, 'muscle memory' certainly kicks-in once you are used to using that knob and yes, you hardly have to glance at the screen when using it. That said, I have owned my 2023 X1 for a month now and can honestly say that I hardly miss the controller wheel now. Voice commands are your friend - BMW have improved this feature an order of magnitude since my last car, and I would say that it is almost as intuitive to use as Amazon Alexa. I have a Yorkshire accent and it understands me!

I would also agree whole-heartedly about ticking the box for Harman Kardon sound – it is well-worth the extra money!

What annoyed me about the heated seats and steering wheel options is (at least here in the UK) you can tick the box for heated seats but in order to get the heated steering wheel, you have to buy an expensive pack, which had I didn’t want – why on earth is the heated steering wheel not bundled with the heated seats option? – it stands to reason that if you’ve ordered heated seats that you will 99% want the heated steering wheel too! Grrr!

After a month of ownership, my biggest gripe with the new X1 is the centre console design:
  1. The cup holders do not have springs in them (I believe they do in the US and Canada) to retain cups/cans that are a smaller diameter than the holes
  2. BMW were too lazy (or cheapskates?) to bother re-handing the flip-up lid and controls for the right-hand drive market
  3. The storage space under the flip-up lid is a good as useless!
  4. Accessing the space under the floating armrest is nigh-on impossible, plus anything you leave there is on show

BTW, I do like the Blue Bay Lagoon Metallic; that said, my X1 is Utah Orange and I love it – I have always had silver/grey/black cars in the past, and decided a change was in order!

Lol - I guess I never use my "personal assistant" or "voice command" because I don't like my music being interrupted lol!

you also brought up good points about the center console - I think BMW should've taken some design tips from Volvo with their XC40 model. I believe the center console in the XC40 can be used as a trash can (inserting a plastic bag in the console) and I believe the newer ones also have a cooling function added too.

What are your thoughts on the volume controller? I am not a fan of having to scroll - I'd prefer having an actual knob.

Lastly, you are in the UK - does your ambient lighting change colors when you switch driving modes or is that only a North America thing?

What is disappointing is that the X7 is the only model I have come across that allows you to change driving modes without it affecting your ambient lighting color (there is a setting for it in the X7, but it is somehow absent in the X1 and the 7 series)?????

Anyways, I love the Orange X1! I think the X1 is one of the handful of BMW's that can literally get away with almost any color - other models include the 3 series (incl. M3), the 8 series (incl. M8), and the 7's lol

I actually like the scroll volume knob

I have the ambient lighting switched off, so I don't know - will turn it on next time I drive in the dark and get back to you

You are lucky the pricing is not like in EU spec cars...
Our car is almost 74k $ which is quite less than almost full spec X3 30i in the US

Also in US you might not but in EU spec car you can have tow bar with M sport package

After 3 BMWs with the iDrive knob I thought I would miss it, but I really barely even think of it anymore. I do think it would be better to have it though, it would make scrolling through contacts or playlists easier.
The ambient color changing with the modes is a minor annoyance for me, but I drive in personal mode 90% of the time.

I did not see this color on car itself, but I saw this on color demo display in the dealership.
In that demo display, color looked more like from the website image than your picture (eg. more greenish than blue).

Best description of the color I can give is Laguna Seca Blue at night, and a shade or two off Atlantis Blue Metallic in the sun. Pretty neat. Reminds me of my Jerez Black in a sense.
