X1 Xdrive 30e Drivetrain Failure

UK X1 Xdrive 30e registered June 23, exactly 5000 miles. Thoroughly enjoyed owning and driving the car until the weekend. Thought I’d share this experience so far.

Normal off peak charging started as scheduled Friday midnight. 1h 20m later “charging paused” and “charging restarted” notifications started repeatedly appearing on the BMW app.

Tried to use car at 6am Saturday but warnings appeared showing:

1) In red - STOP, Drivetrain failure - Driving not possible, call roadside assistance.

2) In Yellow - Drive carefully Power Supply, have the problem checked by the nearest service partner.

Pressing start button makes usual start-up noise and driver display appears. However, car will not engage drive and engine will not start as it would normally if Sport mode is selected.

Oddly the charging flap will no longer lock, charging lights do not illuminate and the active grill is open.

Called BMW assistance and recovery vehicle dispatched. Could not electronically unlock parking lock and release handbrake so unable to roll vehicle onto trailer, despite following instructions in handbook.

Recovery vehicle returned today (Monday) with skates to skate vehicle onto trailer. Fortunately, did not need skates as we worked out how to electronically release park and hand brake.

Plugged in my OBD reader over the weekend and using Bimmerlink found 106 errors in the memory. Reset carried out and 46 active errors remained which would not reset.

Lots of communication and consequential errors but I think one of note is “224F61: Refrigerant shut-off valve, high-voltage battery unit 1: valve is stuck open”.

Seems to be quite a bit of noise on this error on other forums particularly for X5 50e.

Will update further when dealer diagnose and advise.

Noted other experiences of drivetrain issues on this forum.

X1 Xdrive Drivetrain Failure - Repaired

Car returned from dealer today (Thursday). Cause of faults identified as 12V vehicle battery. Battery replaced, faults reset and so far, so good.

Excellent response from dealer and BMW roadside assistance. Loan X1 provided by BMW roadside assistance via Enterprise within hours of car being recovered.

Hoping battery was root cause and did not fail due to another issue. 6 months & 5000 miles for a 12V battery does not inspire confidence, noting a few similar battery issues on this forum.

exactly what I was thinking.

It's 2023 and I can't believe how many posts about failed 12v main batteries are on this X1 forum alone. Some had to have it replaced the day after new car delivery, some after a few hundred or thousand miles.

my previous car had a 100Ah group 49 big battery in the trunk. It lasted 9 years before I had to replace it.(and only because I left the car sitting in the garage for almost 4 months without ever starting the engine)

What's the point of BMW having a 12V battery on a PHEV?

Have an 2023 X1 25e and had the dreaded ‘Drivetrain Error’ 2000 miles into having the car. The vehicle went into BMW and they basically said it was my fault because I wasn’t charging the car often enough to keep the charge topped up in the 12v battery. I haven’t seen the message since, but my electronic tailgate won’t close on the power (seemingly due to low voltage in the 12v battery is what BMW said). Colleagues of mine have X5 45e and 330e and rarely charge and have never had any issues with their cars

Having seen all the posts about dodgy 12v batteries on this forum, is there a case to go back to BMW and politely ask they fit a new one under warranty?!

I've just had the same drive train problem with the exception of:-

The yellow and red warning appeared while the car was stationary and switched off.

The red warning advised of the following:-

We recommend that you schedule a service appointment soon.

Urgent Drive Train Check Up

The drivetrain of you vehicle is malfunctioning. It is possible to continue driving.

Les than one mile later the car came to a complete stop, gear selector in P and handbrake on.

Car recovered to dealer, no news on the fault after a week.
