iPhone GPS while in charging dock
Seems like almost every time I put my iPhone 14Pro Max in the charging dock while using WAZE (or Goole maps and apple maps) the GPS on my phone goes haywire. All maps act the same.
Today, I placed it there on my way home and within a minute or so my car icon was all over the map. I took my phone out and power cycled it. Without it being in the charging dock, all was fine. But then I put it back in and it went haywire once again. I am thinking there is something interfering with the phones GPS while in the dock. This has happened many times now since I picked it up a few weeks ago. It never did it on my Mercedes I just traded in. Anyone else experience this issue? Thanks |

I experienced the same too even when my iPhone is not in the wireless charging dock. But definitely happens more frequently when placed in the dock. Still looking for a solution.

I thought I was going crazy. I don't think there is a solution as my guess its a hardware interference issue.

Strange behavior for sure, maybe an iPhone issue or iOS level issue? Pixel 6 here and I've not run into the issue you've described.

when I was test driving the X1, I encountered the same problem. my iPhone 14 Pro Max was in the wireless charging dock and somehow it was not able to get an accurate GPS location... when I took it off and put it on the dash, everything worked again. The salesman tried it with his Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and it was the same... I didn't think much of it at the time... then I saw this thread....

Just curious what's your iPhone version?
Hope more people can report here if they have the same/similar issue. |

Wireless charging is known to impact GPS signals. It does not happen for all types of Wireless chargers. Looks like the ones used in X1 are not iPhone friendly. Apple, for their part, really makes it tough to be compatible with generic devices. Looks like the electromagnets being used for wireless charging are not iPhone GPS compatible.

Phew -- this thread is strangely validating as I thought I was going crazy. This has frequently happened to me in both Waze and Google Maps, both when the phone is in the wireless charger as well as sometimes just setting it in the cup holder near the wireless charger. iPhone 12 here with up to date iOS. Definitely an issue that I hope gets addressed.

That's a bit disappointing. I guess if it becomes an issue for me I'll be getting a MagSafe charger and mounting my phone somewhere.

Could you please update your first post of this topic to include a list of iPhones that have issue with the wireless charging. Something like: iPhone 12 @who-reported-here iPhone 14 Pro Max @who-reported-here Maybe later on for those who has issue could come together to report issue to BMW. |

There seems to be another issue with GPS and Apple CarPlay. Not sure they are related or they have the same cause at root.

I've been having this issue with having the phone in my lap. Ultimately, have to disconnect CarPlay and use google maps through my iPhone 14 pro.
I've also been having an intermittent issue with listening to FM(I imagine AM and XM are impacted as well), where it'll play the FM station for ~10 seconds, try to switch to carplay(nothing playing) for ~3 seconds, then switch back to FM. This hasn't happened on every occasion, and I typically don't listen to music outside of CarPlay/Spotify, but it's on my list of annoying bugs, now. |

Seems like most of the people in the other threads have reported using iPhone 14's (regular, Pro, Max) with one outlier with a 13 Pro. I'm hoping it's an iPhone bug that can be repaired in a software update, much more convenient to update. If Apple Maps is broken that's going to be a huge disappointment for me as I was looking forward to using it in the instrument cluster.

My iPhone13 and the wife’s iPhone 12 have been having this issue too. Interestingly, it occurred sometimes outside of the holder when the phones are in the front seat area. GPS would sometimes get better when quitting the map app and restarting, but no consistent pattern. The map service, google vs Apple, didn’t make a difference either. |

Ok, I experienced this today too (iPhone 12). Google Maps and Apple Maps, but Waze was ok. In the dock and also out of the dock. I used Google Maps on 12/26 from Philly to JFK airport and back with wired CarPlay in a '22 Mazda, with no issue whatsoever, so I don't think it's entirely an Apple issue. I'm seeing iOS 16.2 update is available, so I'm going to download it JIC.
During this process, I also discovered that if you are using Apple Maps (which I almost never do), the map can be displayed in the instrument panel display, but Waze doesn't show (I didn't try Google Maps tho). So I might have to start migrating to Apple Maps after this glitch is cleared up. I wish this was just a charging dock issue, like OP initially thought, because the dock charges so slow, if I was using my phone for GPS on a longer trip, I'd just plug in to charge anyway. |
