Since - in isolation - this may seem like quackery, I will add further context: the solution was provided by “BMW Genius Advisor”
He called it a “Triple reset” of the iDrive system. While I had my doubts - it has worked for me so far with several days of problem-free driving. On another note - I didnt find moving the phone away from the charging dock had any affect at all. Even up on the dashboard - with a clear view of the sky - the GPS was way off. |

"With the car on, press, and hold the power button for the iDrive system. Hold it until the system turns off, turns back on, turns back off, and turns back on, off again and back on (three cycles). Then - go to the My BMW app on your iPhone, and use your finger to slide the home screen down, in the same way that you refresh your emails. This will cause the app to re-sync. Then you’re done." While it may have been a temporary fix, it is not a long-term fix. |

Seems to me that the memories responsible for gps location cache runs out and old data was not cleared timely by the car's os.

It worked ... for 10 minutes. Then the position jumped 100 feet off the roadway, and was back to where it was before the triple reset. Shoot.
Nope! |

So BMW has already decided to discard iD8 in favor of 8.5 and 9. For anyone who’s more electronic/software engineering savvy than me, is it possible that iD8 and it’s Linux head unit may be the problem? It seems to affect enough various Apple devices it’s not an phone issue. Plus both the wife and I’s phones work fine with our 2020 X1 🤷🏻

Can not tell so far since both hardware and software from BMW has changed between 2020 x1 and 2023 x1.

when it happened to me, my iPhone 14 Pro Max was in the wireless charging dock. when I noticed that the position was off, I picked it up and threw it on the dash(on that plastic mesh thing behind the screen). the map then became normal ago(both position and heading) I figured it was just the phone not getting the GPS signal. However, I read most posts in this thread again... are you guys having to reset iDrive8 because the GPS position was forever stuck or lost? |
