Navigation is standard on the '23 X1; not part of an option package.

I mean that it isn't exactly "free" so if anything goes wrong, we need to complain, right?

Is the navigation free?, I thought you only get it for 3 (or is it 4) years, and then you have to pay subscription. Is that not true?

If I understand it correctly, the subscription is for map updates, the GPS will still work fine. You just won’t have any new map data for any changes to the roads or buildings after the subscription ends.

Real time traffic data may expire, but not navigation itself.

I had emailed BMW Genius about the issue and below is the response I got. Note that they told me to restart iDrive in a previous response which did not solve the issue.

"I am sorry to hear that the troubleshooting did not resolve your Apple CarPlay concerns.

Please know that there our team is aware of an issue with Apple CarPlay navigation for BMW vehicles. Our internal teams are currently looking into a resolution. At this time, I do not have an estimate for a fix. Thank you for your patience.

A resolution to this issue will come as a future Software Update. Your BMW is able to receive Remote Software Updates once they are available for your vehicle. Software updates will be rolled out to customers based on their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). At this time, I do not have information regarding when an update will be available for your BMW. Once it is available, you will receive a notification within your BMW advising you to perform the software update."

has this GPS issue been resolved yet?

as my X1 won't be delivered for a while, I'm still reading about other cars and SUVs... one of which is the Audi A5 Sportback. it seems that many Audi A5 and A6/RS6 owners are reporting the same GPS issues.... some are even more extreme. when using Apple Maps via Car Play in their cars, the car's position can drift to as far away as the next city 10 or 20 miles away.

Interested in this as well. I haven’t had any issues with the GPS on CarPlay, but I’ve been holding off on updating to the most current iOS version just in case GPS functionality gets broken.

iOS doesn’t seem to matter. Had issues on my 15.x, still had them on my 16.X. I will say it’s been a lot better lately, no idea why. Haven’t changed any of the variables on my end

after I read online about Audi A5 and A6 owners having the same exact problem. I remebered that one of my former co-worker had the A5. I asked her about it. She said she had that problem started around Thanksgiving when her family was driving to Boston. They've had the Audi only since 2021. The Audi dealer's service dept coudln't fix it, despite being able to duplicate the problem. All they did was reset system but the problem always came back in a day or two. She stopped using Apple navigation with Car Play on the A5 and used Audi's built-in navigation instead. However, the problem on the A5 seemed even more extrme, as it always showed the car's position miles away, not just yards away like on the X1.

Google Maps just pushed out an app update that supposedly addresses a similar issue

Interestingly the last few times I used it, it was Apple Maps that worked. Haven’t been using Google lately as it doesn’t seem to have HUD compatibility. I wonder if Apple pushed an update. I’ve got a loaner X1 right now, so I’ll try both map services in that to see if I can replicate the issue

The issue occurs with google maps, waze, and apple maps. It drives me nuts! I just really prefer and am used to waze/google maps. But if it's not working on one of them, they all don't work. The point of having apple carplay is to allow you to use your apple device for a variety of things, but MAINLY the gps. Really hoping they fix this soon but haven't found any recent articles regarding this issue or any fixes.

Man, I wonder why only some users are affected and some are fine. I have an iPhone 13 Pro on IOS 16.1.1 and the latest software update from BMW and my GPS works perfectly. I definitely feel for you guys, that is a huge inconvenience!

I use CarPlay and Waze on a daily basis in my iX1 (with latest update) and didn’t even know that this was an issue. I use iPhone 14 Pro with latest iOS and the phone is always on the charging dock.
I always thought that carplay used the cars GPS in compatible vehicles. When I use carplay in my 120i that doesn’t have Nav/GPS I always loose connection in tunnels. Driving through the same tunnels in my iX1 or iX3 works flawlessly.

CarPlay does not use the car's GPS.

Well, I don’t say that you are wrong but there are a lot of articles indicating that wireless CarPlay requires GPS data from the vehicle.

Well wired CarPlay doesn’t—mine definitely loses its signal in tunnels. I don’t know why wireless would be any different since it’s just a different way to connect the phone. And most of these “articles” are just online forums

There is a difference and that's why Apple require in vehicle GPS for wireless CarPlay as its likely the phone is in a pocket, handbag etc. The info below is from one of the Apple WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference).

GPS information is recommended as part of the standard for wired CarPlay systems but required for Wireless CarPlay because the phone is more likely to be out of sight (in a pocket or bag), have no GPS reception (again pocket/bag).

So if the manufacture wants to offer Apple Car play then they need an in care GPS antenna that Apple Car play can use and these days that's likely the same one the in car Sat-Nav is using as well.
