2011 VW Sportwagon TDI or 2011 Sub Outback
Been looking at both cars for daily drivers within the next 1-2 yrs.
Car would be driven in Maine-Mass, I do a ton of skiing, hiking, snowmobiling and biking so I like the space of a wagon. Fuel mileage is important to me VW TDI is only front wheel drive but, diesel, subaru would be 4 cyl. gas but, has all wheel drive.... Any opinions on which one is more reliable, fun to drive? I'm planning on buying one 1-2 years old depending on what deals I can find. 335D would be on my list if they bring a Touring version and manual to the U.S.

I have a 2010 sportwagen tdi 6mt and it's plenty fun to drive. Since it's a diesel is has a fair amount of torque that comes early on in its (tiny) rev range. So far it hasn't had any problems whatsoever, mechanical or electrical. Gas mileage is excellent - on a recent 300 mile trip I averaged 58 mpg going an average of 65 or so mph. Unfortunately I can't comment on the winter handling but I'm sure if you put winters on it then it will be fine.

yeah, I guess I like being outdoors, doing sports that involve no teams.
My E90 330I was a perfect car, I had snow tires on it, a thule rack for my bikes and always took it up north skiing and hiking. I regret selling it sometimes.

I like the TDI a lot more. But for your purposes, I would get the Subie. The diesel will obviously be more likely to last longer and have better gas mileage. I personally hate FWD for many reasons including how unpredictable they are in the snow.

I guess I'm too practical. Its hard for me to justify spending a ton of money on a car I can't drive year round or just when the weather is nice. Like I mentioned before- if BMW would offer the 335D in manual, all wheel drive and Touring that would probably my only car I would own.
