Long story short, one of my employees dropped a conveyor from a pizza oven on my big toe.
it instantly turned black and blue ( the toe nail did anyways) i dont feel any crunching or anything but its throbbing so bad i almost cant talk it. Do i need to goto the ER? i didnt think that they do much for toes other than give you pills and tell you to take it easy for a while. I have pills at home and i dont need anymore but i dont want to goto the Er and just get more pills i have plenty of oxys and perc's for my back The pic does not look nearly as bad as it hurts, this is the 2nd worse pain of my life other than breaking my leg. And no my big toe is not as short as it looks in the picture, its a normal looking toe.................. Last edited by jokergerm; 04-08-2012 at 07:54 PM.. |

Did it get dropped on your toe, or the upper part of your toes (metatarsal)? I ask because it looks like the upper part of your toes are blue.
First of all.. you're gonna loose the nail. It takes about 30 days, but it'll eventually fall off. Don't freak out, it doesn't really hurt.. but dealing with your nail half-attached for several weeks is a pain in the ass. I concur that this kind of injury hurts like a mother-fucker. No one will believe you, but me and anyone else who's done it. The pain and throbbing is super intense and unlike anything I had experienced at the time.. If it's still reallly painful after a few days, then maybe go to a doctor, but the pain should subside after a couple days. Today/tonight will be the worst. It'll feel like someone is tearing off your nail with a pair of pliers. Pic of my injury for proof: Same foot about 2 months later. |

One of the worst pain I've ever felt was when I dropped a 5 lb weight on the second finger of my right hand while the finger was perched on the edge of the barrel. I was 10 yrs old (couple of decades ago). I could not sleep at all that night, as I was writhing in pain. Eventually the pain subsided the next day (endorphins?), and the nail eventually fell off. Looked exactly like your toe, so I doubt anything's broken. There's a lot of nerves and blood vessels under our finger/toe nails. Just pop some pain pills, and you should be good to go.

LOL ya it landed on the upper part of my toe where the nail grows out of the toe i guess you would day. Kinda where the cutical would be. It smashed the shit out of it. i really hope i dont loose my Nail, i lost a finger nail when i was like 12 and that sucked ass.
I just took a percocet 10mg and it made the pain tolerable with out it i was almost yelling and punching things cause it hurts so bad and i have a very high pain tolerance. I lived with a severly pinched siatic nerve for almost 2 years before i gave in and had surgery, so i know pain very very well so we dont think i broke any bones though right?

Probably not broken...
Yeah, that's exactly where mine got hit. You don't think you would loose the nail because the injury doesn't "look" as bad as it is. If in 7 days the blue at the back of your nail doubles in size.. it's a goner. |

Similar thing happened to me in a rugby game on my big toe my some lock stepped on it with his cleat. Actually happened twice that game, but the big toe was 10x worse. Mine took about 2 months to fall off and almost a year to grow back. Definitely agree the two weeks prior to it falling off suck as it gets hung on everything.

A doc may be able to drain blood and some disgusting looking stuff out from under the nail and may prevent the nail from falling off. Happened to a friend of mine who hurt his toe recently.

To stop the throbbing you need to lance your nail and let the pressure out.
Take a safety pin and heat the tip with a lighter. When it's red hot slowly poke a small hole in the nail to let the blood out. You will feel much better, trust me!

I've gotten into BIG arguments about what can cause the most pain possible, and I can say that getting your big toe smashed is one of THE most painful things that can happen, totally incapacitating.
If the nail swells with blood underneath, use a small drill, or heat a paper clip wire and burn a hole in the top of the nail to relieve the pressure, otherwise the throbbing will be really bad. You'll probably lose the nail, but that's really no big deal. I've smashed my toe, and also had both big toenails knocked off/back into the cuticle while racing radio controlled cars (you have to go and turn over crashed cars after you race your race, and the cars hit my toes head-on) and all three occasions were insanely painful. Enjoy the bowl, what you smokin? I know OG and GDP are good for pain. |
