Apple computers now able to run Win XP

From TUAW.com
~~~~
In a bold move today, Apple has released a public beta of Boot Camp, a piece of technology that will be integrated with Leopard that is just for Intel Macs. Why is it so bold? Boot Camp allows you to dual boot Windows XP and OS X on any Intel Mac. The software even includes Mac specific drivers for networking, graphics, audio, Airport wireless, and bluetooth (amongst other things).
~~~~

WOW. Leopard, the next generation of OSX, will be released by Apple later this year. Meanwhile, Microsoft bumbles along and keeps pushing off Vista.

This move could truly put a Mac computer on the desktops of corporate users everywhere.

AAPL stock is up over 5% with announcement.

When you attach a two button mouse onto existing Macs, the OS recognizes and utilizes it. For instance, when at your desktop, you can "right click" and create an untitled folder.

Ironically, I use a Microsoft Wireless Laser mouse with my Mac. All 5 buttons, and the scroll wheel work exactly as they do on a PC.

Dont knock vista just yet, it performs better on my machine than XP did. A friend gave me a valid beta dvd and serial number, so I installed it onto my laptop. Other than the normal slow boot-up time, I really notice how Vista has sped up my laptop. Programs are running quicker, and the GUI (graphics) is out of this world! It makes my 14.1 XGA feel like its 17 LCD screen (using 1400x1050 Settings w/105DPI). To sum it up, I personally think its like a cross of mac easy-to-eyes graphic and turbo boosted XP. Cant wait til they get all these bugs resolved and release it!

I'm not knocking Vista, but it was supposed to be released in early 2005, then 2006, and now 2007. All of the so-called "cutting edge" stuff is being dropped out of the O/S just to make the 2007 deadline.

I found an interesting blog created by a programmer at Microsoft involved on the Vista project. His opinion, and the countless other MS employees aren't too happy with Vista.

Here's the link: http://minimsft.blogspot.com/2006/03...rship-now.html

Blah - seriously, it takes no brain science to UPGRADE your OS. Geezus - how hard was it for me to upgarde to XP from ME/2000/98? Not hard at all - in fact, all I had to do was pop in the CD, click a few buttons and then wait for the sucker to do its own thing.

That blogger is getting his panties all wrung up over nothing. And lastly, who cares if Vista is used all over the world - if it's good, then I wouldn't care if I'm the only one running it - Vista will be backwards compatible (like all other Windows OSs) so that even if today's programmers skip out on Vista, their programs will still work on Vista.

not all windows OSs are backward compatible. i don't know if you remember when windows 2000 (or NT 5.0) came out, all PC magazines were putting together lists of all apps that will not run under 2000. that's why 2000 in its original wrapping never became a consumer OS. they had to upgrade it to XP (which is NT 5.1) to get shit working.

with Vista, it's hard to say what they're going to do taking in consideration they just started rewriting 2/3 of their code. if it came out as it is planner right now, however, it will be nothing more than just plain Windows XP wrapped in a different skin. so it will sure be backwards-compatible. as it was planned originally though, lots of legacy software would not run on it.

Are you actually running the beta as your OS? It must be loaded with bugs.

I can't wait for it... especially the MCE. XP was a great operating system release, I hope Vista is as much of an advance.

I actually am. HAHA! My laptop is the only computer I have at home (I do this so I wont be entice by my boss to take work home). Ive been running it since last monday (build 5342), and its been relatively stable. Its a tad buggy here and there (vista wont install some programs), but works great for everything I use my computer for (AIM/MSN messenger, e90 forum, editing music, and web browsing). Ive notice the programs loading/executing quicker than XP, and doesnt slow down as much when I have 20 applications running. Like I mentioned before, the GUI is as pleasing to the eyes as the G4 Mac. If you want, I can take some sample screenshots when I get home..

Haaa... I love how Apple tries to be 'current' by being able to run a windows OS. They have been doing this for years... My parents had an old mac that was able to run windows 98, but it had to flip flop between the two. It was like having two computers in one...

Ill stick to my Dell and XP OS thank you

Apple isn't trying to be "current". They're taking a step backward by allowing their users to use an outdated, security hole filled O/S on their hardware. They're betting on people buying a Mac since it can run WinXP, and then seeing how flawless OSX is.

I use both O/Ses daily, and by far OSX is the best of the two.

I don't know if you guys know this, but Apple is not just being nice and ALLOWING their users to run XP now. The fact is, several weeks ago, a news article said that a group of independent software "geeks/hackers" figured out how to make the XP run on apple. I guess since they opened the flood gate, Apple just figures what the hell. In fact there were a thread about a week back discussing how much people like their powerbook. I was already asking that since apple now uses intel chips, and runs window xp, aren't they just another very expensive ibm compatible company now?

yep, that's what i heard too. i don't think they figured "what the hell" though. it's more like it was something they needed to do now as a result of it.

anyway, it did help out their stock price.

I think Steve Jobs got the shit right going with Intel Processors, then boom, it's this BootCamp software. No more Virtual PC crap that turns the Mac running like a XT (remember those?)

I was all about buying a gateway Athalon X2 for my office last week until I saw this today. I think i'm getting a Mac Mini, its really cool.

Several weeks ago there was a contest held to see if someone could successfully boot WinXP on an Intel-Mac. Something tells me that Apple has been developing Boot Camp long before this contest started.

Steve Jobs should've entered the contest himself and pocketed the winnings. I think the pot was up to $15k - Steve could use it considering he only earns a $1 per year salary from Apple.
