To go full autonomous driving (no human interface controls in the vehicle) that will return your prospective zero-kill scenario will require a completely controlled driving environment. That will be incredibly expensive. To get to that state, will be even more expensive. It would be far less expensive to improve driver education, enhance driver retraining, make it way harder to retain driving privileges, and provide private transportation services to individuals who just can't learn to drive or lack the capability to drive safely. Non-distracted computers are not going to solve the problem. Computers get distracted too. |

It can be engineered no doubt, but who is willing to pay the hundreds of billions to implement it, secure it and maintain it? Or do it relatively soon and accept personal travel to slow down to a quarter of the average speed it runs at now. Elon isn't smart enough to keep the average travel speed up to what it is now. We've been educating young people to accept socialism and communism for the past 20 years or so, so you may be right that future generations will accept the idea of safety over freedom and intrusion into their personal lives. Sure, Big Tech is there now, but you can still turn it off if you want. Big Tech is already brave enough to curtail freedom of speech, but when does it start to get to curtail freedom of travel? When it runs the national ground transportation grid, that's when. I'll be way dead before that happens. But that's what we're up against if we think a computer system can drive better than humans.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Regardless of the way it crashed why did the car explode on impact? Many gas cars crash at high speed but don't just explode.
