Buying my first BMW- need some warranty advice
Hello
I just ordered my first BMW- an X5 x50e. I have never had a hybrid car nor run flat tires. I know I will be offered warranty’s when I complete the purchase and I’d like some advice on enhanced service plans, extended warranty’s and anything else experienced BMW purchasers can share. I drive 12-15k a year, and plan on keeping the car 4-5 years. I am meticulous about maintenance (it will be at the dealership) and it will live in a garage. Thank you, Maya |

The X-5 comes with a four year 50,000 mile warranty. It also has 3 years of prepaid service.
Personally I never buy an extended warranty or service plan.

Depending on how and where you drive, the tire warranty can pay off, since it includes both tires and significant wheel damage (not curb rash). Tires usually cost about $300-350, and then installation and balance is extra.
In 40,000 miles I’ve had 5 run-flat Pirelli P7’s replaced on my M340i, and each warranty claim was $50. I’ve had one nail, one sidewall bulge, two large cuts from debris, and one blowout from impact on a pothole on the interstate. Everyone hates runflats, but on the last blowout it allowed me to drive 40 miles to the nearest BMW dealer for the tire repair. YMMV. |

Average person can't come out ahead on extended warranty plans or service plans. They pay sales commissions, overhead, literature, the claims, and still make a good profit on it. If the average took out more than they put in the system wouldn't last.
A decent indicator on how much money the sales person or dealership makes on it is how hard they try to get you to buy it. If there wasn't much profit in it they wouldn't bother trying too hard. There will also always be a certain number of people that will get more out of it than they put in but it isn't the average or norm.

I didn't consider buying any of the other enhanced service plans or extended warranty’s. |

These warranties are a scam, nowhere else will you ever find an "insurance" product structured like this where you are paying almost 100% of your potential benefit in premiums. |

Take your new car to a local Discount Tire (America's Tire in California) and they will sell you replacement certificates even if you didn't buy the tires from them. If a tire can't be repaired, it will be replaced for the cost of the certificate and tax on the new Tire. Certificate cost is based on the cost of the tire, but are usually in the $30-$40 per tire range.

In Miami construction on high rise buildings never stops and the surrounding roads are covered with all type of debris. That was how I picked up the nails that caused the flats in my 2 non runflat tires. Also the people that drive here are clueless and I have seen doors swing open in parking lots at my supermarket or places like Costco and leave dings in the cars parked next to them. I visit Puerto Rico several times a year and the highways and local streets are notorious for their huge potholes. If I lived there and a dealer offered a tire and wheel plan I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it. Here is a picture of a runflat tire on my brother in law's Mercedes after he encountered a pothole on a highway that did not have street lights. |

If I had purchased an extended warranty on every car & tire I have ever purchased I would be far behind on the overall plan. If I had purchased the warranty on just the right one it would have worked out well.

I self insure by having a maintenance account that's earning 5.25% via 3 month Cds. If I need the money for a trashed wheel or tire its there and not in BMW's pocket.
