Do 840i's with the 330HP B58 require femto unlock too?
Does anybody have a clue? Guy crashed into my M440i a couple months back, totalled it, and insurance got me my money back. Now I’m looking for the next cop. Ive gotten addicted to the performance from just the BMW M-lite, and I can’t picture myself driving anything with less performance. Next move was initially M3 comp, and it still is the primary move, and I love the grills on the M models so thats not a setback for me. Problem is, our BMW dealer in Saudi Arabia rarely imports M3’s, and special orders for some reason have been shutdown since COVID. I’ve been at their throats wanting to get one, but so far no luck, they have no access to place an order for me, and they cant promise if the next shipment coming in November will have an M3 (probably not. One guy there asked for me and they only told him there’ll be a CS, which I cant afford bcs I’m already stretching ny wallet). And the date for the shipment after that is yet to be disclosed/ nor are the cars coming with it).
Now, a monstrous looking 840i in sapphire black is tempting me at the dealership. It’s guaranteed, and I can sign the papers today and drive it home. However, it’s heavier, and has 50+hp less than my M440i (330hp), which is a downgrade (in performance only). Now I’m considering adding a catless DP and tuning it to stage 2, but I’m not sure if tuning it is as much of a headache as with the M performance B58s, meaning I’ll have to ship my DME to finland, sit without a car for a couple weeks and sell half a kidney. I was thinking, could it be as straight-forward as 1st gen B58s since it has the same HP as theirs? And is the car as prepped for tunability as the M-lite B58s or do I have to change more than a downpipe? |

Would a used M850i be a better alternative? Rob Last edited by Rob_G77; 09-21-2023 at 04:53 AM.. |

To put you in perspective, the M3 Competition (sometimes with bucket seats, sometimes not, but they standardize the price) goes for USD $140k here. The 700km used 840i goes for $112k in contrast. M850i here costs $165k, the same price as an M5 Competition. M8 Competition goes for $186k. I wouldn’t go above USD $145k. |

If it is on the same ecu as the F3x cars with gen1 b58, you won't need a femto unlock, but you will either need a bench unlock by a shop or you can buy a device that can attach to the ecu and do the bench unlock process yourself.
The production date and ecu is the determining factor of if a femto unlock is needed. If the car hasn't had software updates in a while and its on the same ecu as the F3x b58 cars, its possible you won't need any unlock at all and could flash the car straight from a tuning platform like BM3 or MHD.
