my X1 stop/starts 286 times over the last 10 days. how can that possibly not be bad?
[begin rant]
This was the rabbit hole that I didn't want to go down, but I saw a $3 handheld clicker/counter at a big box store a couple of weeks ago... so I got it. I just wanted to see just how many times the engine stop/start occurs. Each time the engine stopped, I clicked it once. I don't click if the engine stops for more than 5 seconds.(like at an actual red light) Over the last 10 days, the counter reached 286 over a total distance of 167 miles driven. That means the engine stopped and restarted unnecessarily for more than 28 times per day on average. The majority stops are less than 2 seconds long, thanks to all the stop signs in my area. Pardon my French, but that's total connerie. At this rate, the engine will perform auto stop/start for no good reason more than 10,000 times in a year.(based on my expected 6000 miles per year) At best, in a year, it will save me a couple gallons of gas or about $6.50 based on this week's gas price.($3.18/gal for premium at the local Costco) Well.. guess I'll just have to make sure it's deactivated each time I get into the car. I've never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, so I can't possibly smarter than BMW engineers or perform brain surgery. Having said that, does it really take engineer to realize that 10,000 extra unnecessary engine stops and restarts can't possibly be a good thing?(for the longevity of the engine or the environment) [end rant] |

The engine and starter is designed to take a huge number of interactions for this very reason. Have starters failed more because of the stop/start - NO.
Why well as above they are engineered to meet the requirements of the car in a very detailed way from the power surge the benefit or for the EU models adding extra power into the mix (Extra 11bhp and even faster starts the US doesn't get). Enjoy the car stop worry about shadows and chill out. |

Start/stop tech isn't new. My 2014 328 has it (88K miles and still going strong). Hybrids have had this tech even longer.
Show me on owners forums where there has been any alarming uptick in failures of starters or other engine parts? I've never seen anyone in the 3-series forums posting that it actually happened to them - only that the sky "may" be falling. |

Not a chance. The U11 X1 stop/start is much smoother than my '14 328. The issue isn't how smooth the stop/start is. The issue is the transmission hesitation and, for me, that the "stop" kicks in before the car comes to a full stop. But the actual stopping/starting of the engine is noticeably better than my last car.

Overthinking this...just put it in sports mode if you're concerned about future starter failures...mind you, it's under warranty. I doubt most of us will own this vehicle beyond 4 years anyway...and wait a sec, don't you have a 7 year warranty? So who cares if the starter did fail due to a bazillion stop/starts
