12v charging with EV charge cable
Hi everyone.
I’ve just collected my (nearly new) X1 30e. Does plugging the car in for EV charge not also top up the 12v battery? I’ve planned for keeping it topped up so I can run almost all my daily journeys on electric, so other than my longer trips and spirited driving I’m hoping not to run the petrol…. But if it’s the alternator that charges the 12v that’s not going to work..? My colleague believes his Mercedes hybrid does pass charge onto the 12v. I had hoped my days of having to plug in a CTEK were over…. Running two cables to the car seems like a backwards step? |

It’s understood it ultimately charges both. When the car is charge the internal and 12v of the car is also live as part of the process.
Charge, drive and enjoy the car. |

There is a DCtoDC converter which passes energy to the 12v battery.
But I believe this DC to DC only works when car is in driving mode. So....if you drive car often, even if only electric, 12v bat will be kept ok. If you don't drive for loooooong periods....12v battery may be lost with time, even if there is HV battery charge
