M62 ticking noise

Hi all, bit of a sad first post. My M62TU equipped X5 4.4 has developed a ticking noise. I checked the spark plugs they where all tight.

Engine is at the mechanic now, curiously when he revved it the the ticking noise stayed at the exact same frequency as when it's at idle.

Mechanic believes it could be the oil pump (chain?).

I was thinking maybe the dreaded timing chain guides myself, but surely the frequency would increase when the engine is revved.

Worst is my warranty ran out just 2 months ago.

I used the mechanic before but surely it's always good to maybe have another opinion.

4.4 TU then, if oil pump chain drive then ticking would increase with revs I think. Does oil temp and coolant temp remain normal when hot?

Hi rick, yes temperatures stayed stable and as normal. I only noticed the ticking of the engine on friday and didn't drive it since.

If you can put a short vid on, would help a bit... does ticking stop if air con is switched off?

Should premiere in a few minutes.

I did turn the aircon off and still heard it, but can't check it now as engine is being lifted out...

First impressions are some sort of broken header sound (exhaust manifold) but as you have the PU out now the tech should get to it more easily.
Come back and tell us what it was exactly when it's fixed.

Just an update, engine was pulled as mechanic suspected a broken oil pump, but it turned out to be the predictable timing chain rattle.

Actually rather pleased with that, to be honest. Predictable fault, reasonably easy fix.

just waiting on the part to arrive now and can finally get back to driving it.

So parts took forever to arrive, as the wrong part was send preventing any movement forwards.

All hoses have been checked and those that needed replacing because they were brittle were replaced. A few others things done etc. Picked it up a couple of days ago.

Only worry I had is I had to move the car because the house painters needed to be where the car was and I noticed what looked like coolant leaked from under it. I put a small cup under it and collected it. It really was a small amount, total that leaked out was maybe a small shot glass full? Obviously I did inform the garage, brought it to them but couldn't see any leaks. Took the engine cover off as well but no obvious signs and the reservoir is at an appropriate level (I was there with the mechanics the whole time).

Not sure what to make of it, they advised me to keep an eye on it and just keep some coolant in the car just in case and check levels after every trip and of course keep an eye on the temperature.

It was probably residual stuff from it being drained. It's a huge mess, it just gushes all over everything. A few days later there's blue drops on the subframe, steering rack, etc, etc. certain places still. He probably sat there with a rag and wiped up what was there at the time but there's usually more hiding that will drop down over the next day or two.
