Battery management message after extended CTEK charging session

Hi all,

Picked up wife's new U11 a few weeks ago and it has been storaged in our garage until it was ready to be taken for PPF and window tint, which was today.

In the time it was in storage, I had it on a CTEK Polar (https://smartercharger.ca/collection...-nus-4-3-polar).

When I went to start it, I got a message exactly like this:

https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...1&d=1618688263

"Battery management. Malfunction when shutting down the vehicle electronics when vehicle is stationary. If the problem recurs, have it checked by your service center."

Car started fine and drove fine for 45 minutes after.

Anyone else seen something similar?

I don't have an answer but the battery system on the car behaves very differently than any car I've owned before..... or my battery or something else is defective. Does anyone know what battery is in our X1s??

I haven't gotten any messages but I've been monitoring the battery voltage closely. We live In a really cold climate and drive into very rural, desolate places regularly. I'm a little concerned about getting stranded in the middle of nowhere

While driving, the car NEVER shows less than 14.7 volts at the cigarette lighter. EVER - which is kinda odd. Even if the battery was on a charger the night before. An hour after the charger shuts off (at 14.5 V and amps going from 10A to 0A) the battery shows 12.6V .

Sitting overnight it's usually at 12.2 in the morning - which should be equivalent to only 60 percent charged.... 40 percent lost!

But, putting it back on the charger, it'll max out the 10A charger in only 15 minutes as it ramps from 12.8v to 14.6v very fast. Accepting only a few amps

it seems like something is either very different with the X1s battery, or my brand new vehicle has a problem similar to others here.

One thing I noticed about the ctek charger is you can't set the battery type to AGM, it's probably nothing but it is something to note. AGM batteries get a conservative charge profile with a lower max voltage compared to typical Wet cells

everything described is correct - 12.2 after 24 hours of idle time. this frankly worries me as i have not seen anything like this before. i want to check what will happen to the battery in 5-6 days. although i don't want to call for service if the battery dies

I don’t actually understand the facination on this site with owners plugging, or feeling the need to connect their car battery to a charger. In all the years of owning modern cars, this is my third BMW, I’ve never needed a charger or had a battery failure. I recently left my X1 at an airport carpark for two weeks with no issues when I came back. Is there something I’m missing about BMWs batteries or am I just lucky?

After replacing the main computer and battery due to rapid discharge, I would be very careful leaving the car for 2 weeks. And yes, I have also never seen anything like this before.

My concern stems from 2 issues.

The first is several reports of error messages numerous people have seen that relate to battery issues. A bunch of cars had defective batteries installed that led to transmission faults and replacements. I'm not sure how thesr issues are related but they seem to be, reading the posts of afflicted owners

The 1st issues led me to want to watch my battery voltage. After 2 weeks of watching my cars battery, I can say that I've never seen anything like it in any new car. The battery seems unable to maintain an 80 percent or better SOC. The car is unable to charge it back to good health on drives less than 90 minutes (my longest drive since monitoring). At best the battery will have a short life due to sulfation. At worst, my car will leave me somewhere in frigid temps (below 15F)
many miles from civilization..... That's why the concern.

Hi,

Are you saying that even after getting all that work done your still seeing a steep drop in voltage?

even my BMW tech at the dealer told me the same thing. He said the new X1(U11) seemed to have more issues related to the battery and/or charging system, unlike other recent BMWs.(even the previous F48 X1)

I was asking about connecting my X1 with the "official" BMW charger that the dealer sells. I drive very few miles on my X1, usually around 400 miles per month, which is why I want to keep the battery topped up with the trickle charger. However, he advised me against using it, even if it's the official BMW charger, unless I plan to leave the car in the garage for more than a month.

I drove 2 plus hours today on a topped up fully changed battery. The voltage didn't change at all the entire drive. Sitting at 14.7 - 14.8 volts. Something seems wrong. I'll call my dealer to get their opinion tomorrow.

On the plus side this car is just as much fun as the rear biased 1st gen. Gave the 4 Blizzaks their first real ride today. Drifts turns in a nice predicable manner
