Remove blue jean dye transfer from Oyster seat color

We've started to notice (after 7,500 miles), that the driver's seat is starting to show wear (assuming it's from wearing blue jeans).

Has anyone else noticed this and any suggestions for cleaning the existing seat or adding a seat cover?

It’s called dye crocking, and it’s not uncommon especially with lighter colored interiors. Denim is often very overdyed, and it’s notorious for this (it also happens frequently with shoes and bags).

I had one car with a light-colored leather interior, and I didn’t have much luck with cleaning it. It’s been 14 years, so I assume there are better cleaning products available to deal with it. It won’t necessarily clean it all, but it can help a lot. My solution (which isn’t helpful to you at this moment) is to not buy light colored interiors or furniture. 100% dealbreaker for me.

As far as covers, they do exist, but you absolutely have to make sure they are approved for use with the side airbags.

Before anybody flames me, I lived in the southern United States for DECADES and I understand that darker interiors are warmer in the summer. My first car had a black 1960s era VINYL interior and zero air conditioning, so yeah, I get it.

I would not consider what you are referring to as wear pattern (s). Like others mentioned, it’s transfer of dye which is very common.

I had 2 vehicles with very light color, each were leather. The first was a VW & I’d have to use a leather cleaner monthly to remove the jean dye. The other is an 2019 Acura RDX & has Merino leather with some type of coating. What ever that coating is, it totally blocks dye transfer.

So if you like the bright interior look, which I do, plan to maintain it properly & it should last a while & look great.

My 2024 x1 is Veganza “mocha” in color & it’s darker than the oyster you have.

Veganza is a vegan leather alternative made from recycled plant materials. it is marketed as a plastic-free option & no petroleum-based components.

Here is a link about cleaning Veganza

I tend to use bilt hamber products for cleaning.
Sufex hd is their apc.
Lots of reviews on it on youtube etc and its available in many countries. It has a good track record.

I have the vernasca oyster and use the 303 vinyl cleaner for the color transfer. Works very well. Now have some conditioner with coating so need to see if still works well. In principle those new leather materials are coated with some layer that allegedly resembles vinyl.

Hmm, if the Audi dealer has this I might give it a try.

I have Oyster SensaTec seats, with a little over 16,000km (10,000miles). The seats still look pretty spotless.

If you really can't get rid of that using interior cleaners like CarPro Inside cleaner + nice brush + tonnes of patience, you could go a bit extreme: Magic Eraser. There was one spot that I couldn't get rid of on the Oyster seats, and I used the magic eraser VERY (and I emphasize VERY) gently. I know this could get a lot of disagreement on. I would really leave this as the absolute last resort. It worked for me, but you would need to be very careful about how you use it.

Meanwhile, I would suggest that you bring your butt so that it doesn't drag over the bolster when you enter/leave the car. I do this for all my cars, and I've had seats looking nearly brand new after 100,000km. I noticed that a lot of color transfers occur around bolster area instead of the middle part of seats when I looked at other people's cars.

Other things you could do in future is to use vinegar (some say salt) to set in the dye for your jeans. This tends to work most of the time. I also apply CarPro Leather 2.0 coating to the seats, except it doesn't last that long though.

Hope this helps

Saddle soap can potentially damage synthetic “leather”, so it’s best saved for actual leather products. If you really want to use it, please test it in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it won’t damage the finish.

Stupid question perhaps, but have you tried going to an auto detailer or auto upholstery shop?

I’m sure they see this type of thing all the time and would have some recommendations and/or products that can help.
