Where are you guys buying your harder to find bourbons? I'm in Pennsylvania and we have a horrible state run liquor store system. I'm close enough to Delaware that I frequently go down there to stock up. I'm OK with going the secondary market, but have no idea what sites are reputable and fair. I started watching Unicorn and Good Bottle auctions, but would love to hear any other tips / tricks to track allocation releases, get a heads up when something good is coming out, etc. Just for personal consumption (been searching for any of the allocated Michters bottles (10yr / toasted) for a couple months with no luck).

I hate paying for shipping, but here in the Houston area we are pretty blessed with good distribution. Much better than where I used to live in CT. I've only used Seelbachs, but that doesn't have super rare stuff. Unicorn Auctions has good reviews from friends of mine.
PA is tough since it's state run, do they do any lotteries? Some state run monthly or yearly lotteries where it's luck of the draw. Not sure how DE is... Mostly it's about finding a store (in DE) you like, and make some friendships with the people behind the counter. Talk to them, let them know what you are looking for, and spend your money at that store. The common phrase is "It's all about relationships." That's how I get hard bottles, I've got a few stores I frequent and they know me. Also - as boomer as it is, FB can be a good way to get info fast. I use it almost completely for whisky. Find some local whisky/bourbon groups and join. Quote:

Has anyone here done both the bourbon trail and whiskey trail experiences? I am curious how the two areas compare. From some google searching it seems there are many more experiences on the bourbon trail.
My buddies and I went to the bourbon trail this past October and we are now planning another trip this coming October. The whiskey trail is on the table as an option. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I've done the entire main side of the KY Bourbon Trail, but haven't done all of the Craft side. I'm not sure what you mean as far as a separate "Whiskey Trail". What are you referring to? I can send you some info on the KY Bourbon Trail from me or some of my bourbon nerd friends when I get back home in a few days. If you go back a bit in this thread, I think I posted some stuff for another poster |

In TN, I did a few a couple years back near Nashville. Great city for food, bars, music. -Nelson's Green Brier was a basic tour, good Whisky to taste though. -Corsair tasting, not at the Distillery, wasn't super into their stuff. -Old Smoky had free samples and was more a bar, good cocktails. Very touristy. It's probably worth planning a trip, they have a TN whisky trail passport just like the KY trail. There's damn good Whisky in TN. One of my favorite Distilleries is Chattanooga Whiskey, they make great stuff. |

I bit the bullet and joined Unicorn. I will say the packaging, shipping & delivery process was great.

Nice score JPA. That toasted barrel is in my top 5 pours…just hits right.
Been using unicorn a bit as well…share your sentiment. Additionally, they will actually answer the phone. Happy spring. Enjoy cat! B. |
