The neighborhood stray we adopted 3 years ago has a habit of going
outdoors 4 to 6 times in the morning. He goes out for 10 to 15 minutes,
then comes back in for a snack, followed by the mandatory bathing in
front of the fireplace. After a brief cat-nap, its back outdoors for another
10 or 15 minutes.

Cats seem happiest when sticking to routine.
