So while I'm home for Thanksgiving a buddy of mine who I used to play in a band with and have done several photo shoots for called me and said they have a big gig this friday night downtown in chicago. I already planned on being in attendance but he's asked me if I wouldn't mind shooting the show for them cuz its being sponsored by a local radio station and they want a bunch of promo stuff from it. I agreed but silly me left my Canon rig back up at school not thinking I'd need/want to use it.

A good friend of his who is doing lighting for the show has a pretty nice Nikon setup (still waiting on word of exact equipment) and is going to let me shoot with it for the show since he cant.

So anyone who's shot Nikon and Canon wanna give me a quick crossover lesson so I don't waste 2 hrs trying to figure out how to change the ISO on the camera and miss half of the shots? Any info/tips/tricks would be helpful.

I have had a D70s and a D80 and there pretty straight forward. If you just pick it up and play with it for a few minutes you should be fine.

Most DSLR's have different modes. For any camera, there is no right or wrong mode, just depends on how much control you want.

For the majority of my photos, I stick to A or Av mode which gives me control over the depth of field and it adjusts the shutter speeds. S or Tv mode allows you to control the shutter speed and the camera adjusts the aperture automatically.

Full manual will mean you just need to experiment.

Quick! find your nearest electronics store and grab a Nikon on display and start playing with it!

I have a D300, just normally shoot with A mode, unless you have action shots, then use M or S. I recommend you play with the exposure as well. Always shoot raw.

RAW and sometimes NEF, or both.

+1 I hope he does have really fast lenses. Depending on lighting conditions. (probably going to be poor) your going to have a challenge if you don't have some good glass. Good luck

ive done it before with kit lenses... I usually still try to stay below 800 iso obviously but it can be done at f/5 @ 1/50 and just a little work in PS but I'd obviously like to try and shoot at 200 or 400 though. hopefully if he has a nice camera hes got some nice glass to go with it. Guess its not a bad situation though, if they end up sucking then I'll just blame it on his camera

any tips on navigating through menus and whatnot?

Some of the newer lines have a slightly different menu setup (D60, D300 [I think], D90?)... but even the older D80 style menu is still fairly intuitive. Some have dedicated ISO buttons, others, like my D60, have buttons that can be reprogrammed to do ISO or whatever you desire.

Never having shot with a newer Canon extensively, I'm not sure what tips to give you other than spending a few minutes getting used to the menus, modes, etc. Not a huge difference, I wouldn't think.

I was dooped.

D40 with the 28-55mm kit lens. I almost would have been better off shooting with my fucking iPhone. When ever someone who knows nothing about photography says their buddy has a really nice camera... BEWARE!

I'll post a few of the pics in a couple days (that is if any turn out cuz I was shooting at 1600 ISO the whole time and most of them still came out close to pitch black).

my camera is always ready... my car unfortunately never is. just saw about 100 little tiny chips on my hood/bumper from pebbles yesterday. I'm super pissed now cuz it looks like i'm gonna have to have the entire front end painted now.
