Nice DS mode feature on Lexus IS
Just drove a Lexus IS250 and was surprised on the feature it had in DS automatic mode. When you slide the transmission to DS mode, it defaults to the 4th gear. This can be changed to 5th or 6th gear. What this means is that in DS mode the transmission will shift up to the gear that you select. I think this is a great feature and maybe BMW will feature something similar sometime soon.

6spd manual ftw. My mom has an is250, I think its one of the worst cars I've ever driven, its got the worst suspension ever, and no power to speak of.

The autotragic in the IS is very slow to respond, the paddle shifter is basically a useless option because of its reponse time.
Should not even be compared to the 6spd Step in our BMWs, the only other automatic that I've sampled that is pretty good is the new G37 7spd with the rev-match feature in DS. Paddle shifts are pretty quick just like the steptronic, it also gives a nice blip of the throttle when downshifting a gear. Very cool indeed. |

Steptronic's manual-mode programming is garbage IMO. It responds quickly enough, but downshifts at WOT should not happen unless the driver asks for them. It's extremely frustrating to ask for WOT in a taller gear and get a downshift instead. Lame. Hopefully the DCT won't do this.

Agreed. I did not say it is a good shifting transmission at all. The ZF unit on my 335i is unparalleled. It is the best auto/steptronic I have driven. All I'm saying is that the Lexus has a really nice feature. When you put it in DS mode, it allows you to select up to what gear you want the tranny to shit to. For example if you select 4, it will shift from 1,2,3 and 4 and then not go to 5 and 6. If you select 5, it will go 1,2,3,4 and 5, and if you select 6, it will shift up to 6. On my 335, when you chose DS mode, it will shift up to the 5th great and you cannot select the choice that the Lexus offers.
Yes, the Lexus is no where close to the 335i. I was just impressed by this feature that's all. |

I know Lexus made some improvements to the suspension and steering in the 2008+ IS's. I almost bought a new 2007 IS - I'm glad I didn't, but I still love the styling of the IS. It's much nicer than the 3. (Start flaming me now!) It could also be that there are E90s all over Boston, so I feel less special.

Now that BMW has dispensed of the 325 line, I'd buy a 328i any day over the IS250. Not only that, I'd probably look at a slightly used IS350 for the money.
