Borders Bookstores Shutdowns
Anyone else but me saddened to see Bookstores like Borders going out of business? I hate that the iBooks and Ebooks are replacing actual bookstores. Thoughts?

one is closing right by my apartment... I hate this for actual reasons. I deal in recycling. Less paper generation = less profit over time. That is why I have been building up a small E-waste company in preparation for the inevitable disappearance of all paper goods.

There are now lightbulb compactors that eat 1000 bulbs and the machine only costs $1,500.00 for a good one. The boxes after 6 months cost that much. But when they jumped on the boxes they invested all of their capital into this one program and completely ignored the new technology. Now they are getting KILLED by veolia and other providers that recognized the boxes (while still carrying them as an option), but also use the compactors. I like Republic/Allied waste. I REALLY like Covanta. They are a waste to energy company that is absolutely dominating the market and will soon make Landfills smaller and smaller due to the amount of waste being incinerated. Most of these companies you know of make the real money with transfer stations/landfills, not necessarily curb collection. Oh and if you want to get into the real quick movers look at the recycling companies. Georgia Pacific, etc. They are as good as gold.

If there wasn't a Starbucks inside most B&N stores they would be heading towards bankruptcy as well.

btw, don't think paper good will disappear; at least i hope it won't. the consumption may be decreasing, but there's no way paper will be replaced. besides books, we still use paper for a great variety of things that can't be easily replaced, like packaging for example. |

I couldn't care less they are being shut down. I will purchase my books for cheaper, then read them at home or some coffee shop. There's nothing special that Borders provided that I couldn't find elsewhere for much cheaper.

i like being able to browse in the store. maybe read a couple pages to see if i like the writing style and whatnot. you can't do that online. now that borders is done, i can't think of any other retailer other than B&N.

Can't remember the last time I was in a book store. I am pretty sure last time I checked, Amazon and/or Barnes & Nobles lets you read the first chapter online. |

y'know... think you're right. i still like to physically hold my books though; more relaxing for me than reading off a monitor. haven't tried the kindle so don't know how it is on the other side. not sure if i'd switch over anytime soon.
