Wow Rodi I really enjoy that shot! I like how there is still subtle texture on the wall and not just a white - black gradient like some shots are. I love the bokeh on your shots Bill, whats the EXIF info? Only thing I would try and do is on the right image it looks like her arm is blending into the tree, maybe try and burn it a little maybe?

Nothing special just really enjoyed the clouds and friend wanted a few pictures of his car, I do no enjoy shooting black cars! Haha, anyone have tips on shooting black cars?

I feel this is a better attempt at shooting the car, but I had to do quite a bit of editing to bring the lines out.

use flash to even up the exposures on the black cars..... I don't know, i haven't really tryed to shoot the black too much without blowing out the background to get details, but i figure if you're gonna do it, get a flash aimed at the thing and just blast it.

^^^Good to know....now what about white cars? They are almost impossible to get right in my experience(esp. during ANY type of bright daylight)

haha, no idea... I tend to take my camera and aim it at an object that is in the middle between my brightest things i'm going to shoot and my darkets.

common ground is grass, so i tend to set my exposure using grass, and look at my histogram. Then shoot stuff and adjust slightly from there. So far it's been working for my exposures. (this is something i've been trying more recently.)

I tend to get a light blue sky, and some of the dark greens in the shade, might be a little on the dark side, but they can be brought up a bit in post processing.

that's what i did with the house picture a few posts ago. some of the trees leaning in towards me ended up being pretty dark in the picture, but post processing brought them out a little and made things more neutral.

Sadly I don't have any external flashes, going to invest in some when I get the 7d/5d. What I have been doing with black cars is either slight hdr, or 2 exposures one exposed for the car, one for everything else and mask the well exposed car shot into the background one (if that makes sense). I have had much better luck with white cause, I learned that shooting them in shade is a must though.
This is with a white s5, half in the shade and half out so it kind of shows when its in the sun it gets blown ( I even edited it to bring out more detail ) But in the shade you can see the lines quite good and you get great reflections. Sorry if that doesn't make sense haha.

Good demo

the 7D controls external flashes nicely, if you get the current model 5DmkII you're going to get into issues figuring out what flashes you'll need to control and receive or if you choose to use poppers.

The 7D you can just buy the cheepest flashes you can find that work as slaves and you'll be set. but don't expect to ever use them with poppers because they won't have the connections. So you won't be able to use them as slaves if you ever upgrade to the current 5D, you would need a master for that. But i'm betting if you wait till the next 5D comes out that it will be able to control slaves without having to have a flash in the hot shoe.

(not sure i made sense, i'm typing too fast for my own good at the moment, and i don't know why.)

just a for fun picture.

thousands upon thousands of champagne bottles stacked in rows. aparently the wall was 16' behind this row of bottles, and they were stacked like this all the way back. And there were several bays like this.

Thanks, guys! i'm wanting to re-do these. because i couldn't fit the lights that i wanted in the confined space. but glad you like it! self-portraits aren't as fun as shooting models. so aggravating.

Good advice and an easy and common slip-up for any photographer. When I got my first SLR in Korea waaaaaaay back in '77, I took a shot of my Squadron CO with the Division Commander (a two-star general). The shot was almost perfect with both of them smiling and spot-on exposure. But I did what came natural and centered their faces in a portrait mode shot, so they had a lot of nothing above their heads and were cut off at the knees. To this day when I turn my camera sideways, I think of that shot and remember to adjust the centering.

haha, that was just the the chanpagne that was fermenting. there were barrel rooms and big vats of the stuff in other rooms too, all in different stages.

It was a wine tour some friends and myself did in some spare time before one of them had to catch a flight.

Very enjoyable and informative.

It was just outside of Niagra Falls on the Ontario side. I finally tasted an icewine. Very interesting stuff, but i think a little too sweet for me.

thanks! all these simple things always slip my mind when I'm out shooting portraits. Guess i should shoot more to get it stuck in my head!
