After several weeks of work and travel keeping me out of the woods and away from my favorite ponds and lakes I finally got back out and here's part of the result:

Nice shot! I'd really like to get into shooting more birds and wildlife. If only I could sell a new lens purchase to the wife.

Sell wife, purchase lens?? not really.
Or for ~1300 get a 300 F4 and 1.4x if you are shooting a Canon.
It works nicely for me on my 40D but focusing is not so hot with the 40D.

I'll 2d the 300/f4 with a 1.4x TC as a very effective way to get into nature photography. Focusing with the 7D is excellent.

People with a larger budget will want the 300/f2.8 with the 1.4x TC and the 2.0x TC.
