They are the same part numbers physically exactly the same with the exception of an extra cooler on the m3 and also a different shifter(gws) otherwise the software calibration is different that's all.

Hey probably have much more robust/expensive DCTs in them that would be cost prohibitive for under $100k BMWs.

well im over the dct vs zf8at in an m car. fact is im glad im alive in the golden age of HP and some truly fabulous cars.

But my next car maybe an electric with no transmission. looking to the future im excited, with cars like lucid, tesla and i hope bmw delivering some truly astonishing performance.
1000 hp and 2 sec to 60 going to the supermarket is something i look forward to.

so bmw M can put whatever they want in thier cars but the future is here.

Sadly though, that is the future.

Electric autonomous cars.

And as we gradually head in that direction, manufacturers will gradually start to remove any 'manual' elements of car design that won't work with autonomous vehicles......and the big elephant in the room as far as that is, is of course the manual gearbox.

Any one currently age 50+ will probably not have to worry, but those of you under 30 will have to accept that by the time you're well into your 40's, its very likely that no car manufacturer will be still making a manual gearbox.

Heh, I'm torn too. The techie in me is pretty excited about the above, for sure. There's just no way traditional cars are going to compete, especially in terms of putting precision power to the ground. (Also, unless they build in obsolescence, they should last longer and be easier to fix... lots less moving parts, no messy coolant systems, etc.)

But, I'm also going to really miss the growl of the engine and the level of mechanical craftsmanship that has been achieved.

It's a moot point, though, for most of us, until battery tech takes a couple of big steps (I've heard promising things about aluminum based tech). For example, if I went to Vancouver and picked up a Tesla... there's currently no way to make it back home w/o finding a friend in-between who'd let me visit and borrow their power for a night.

The i8 is actually about the closest thing to realistic in terms of electric... but w/o the above advantages of simplicity (and, other nonperformance hybrids).

I've yet to drive a good paddle-shifter except in Gran Turismo. But, if that's how all the race cars are now setup, it can't be too awful (as much as I'm nostalgic about manual).

I'm with you. i will miss the growl of the engines but all you have to do is pump in fake noises. bmw is already doing that. you could be listening to a v8 or v10 sound track on alternate days or different sport modes

i looked at my s63 engine yesterday and shuddered thinking about trying to work on it. something ive done to all my prior bmws.

as for long trips i think that "zip car" like services will fill in the gap and you could drive something more exotic than you own on long trips.

the frustration is that by design MT>DTC>AT for a M car. I would not want a MT or DCT in a minivan. no matter how much they claim the AT has closed the gap on the DCT i don't buy it.

I've driven a car with the ZF many times - nice transmission, and very snappy...but no DCT.

I bought the DCT...I wouldn't buy the current version of the ZF. That's just a fact.

A couple of days ago I drove the ZF 8 speed 2014 228i sportline. Nice car. These things are getting CHEAP. 35000 and CPO right around 22500 was what they were going to sell it for.

Quicker than I thought.

Sounded better than I thought inside and out..any digital sound processing seems to be fairly transparent and unnoticeable.

I drive an F10 and it seems odd to say it but the 1 has an "F" feel. Probably down to the Electric power steering and "F" thinking in the suspension. Lighter on its feet.

It felt more upscale than my 135i

The ZF is a magnificent piece of work and does a great job of anticipating what you want. Car didn't have paddle shifters and that would be mandatory. Kickdown from 6th to 4th in one big jump. Silky smooth shifts in comfort and snappier in sport.

That being said the 135i has personality. The 228i seemed a bit motoring appliance. No way I'd replace the 1 with it. I can see where the M2 is good. If the base car with sport felt solid and handled well I can see where better suspension and 120 more hp would be great!!!


But make mine a manual....
