You guys brought up very good points, which I agree with. The thing that irks me is that not only are people looting in Ferguson, people are looting in cities throughout the country. I mean, why?? It has nothing to do with most of them besides the skin color. It's sad to see how we have come so far just to go back to where we were. It is as if those people have grudges against certain things and just needed a reason, any reason, to riot.

If you look at the protesters (the real protestors, not the looters), they are upset with how blacks are handled by the police. They say there's police "brutality" against blacks, and that's what they're tired of.
I've lived in this country as an immigrant for a long time, and have NEVER EVER been a victim of police brutality. I've been pulled over by cops of all flavors and have always been polite. I'm on Liveleak every day and when I see a police "brutality" video, it's always because the suspect is acting out of line. If you'd just fucking behave around police, I firmly believe they'd treat you with respect. Whenever a cop's been a dick to me, I deserved it and I apologized. |

People are rioting because they are fed up with the inequality and oppression. You really expect them to act rationally? Of course burning down things is counterproductive, but at this point, what IS productive? Nothing. So there is rage and pent up anger that gets released. Blaming people for their (just) rage is just clouding the real issue.
An unarmed man was shot and killed by a police officer, and that police officer was not held accountable. It happens way too frequently in our society, and it is in fact an outrage. The posts in this thread try to muddy the waters by citing 'facts' that support their already held (and often racist) views. There never should have been a grand jury. The prosecutor should have charged and brought the case to trial, just like any other case. And in this case, he sabotaged his own case and basically put on a side show. It doesn't take 100 days for a grand jury to indict. It takes 100 days for them to figure out how to tell people why they won't, when they should. Bring it to court and let the justice system work. |

I'm sorry but that's just not happening. This town is 21,000 people, a little over half of whom are black. There simply isn't enough police manpower for this to be happening to anyone in Ferguson, or anywhere else. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is getting pulled over 150-200 times a year.

As far as OP, that's how the media portrays blacks. All blacks aren't rioting (maybe you missed the media coverage they didn't show of blacks defending stores in Ferguson from being looted). The media plays what they think will get the most views. And FYI - it happens to all races. I lived in San Francisco when the giants won the world series and can assure you, those riots weren't composed entirely of blacks.

I never stated I knew what it is like to be an African in the US. I was replying to his comment about the white vs black stigma, and the fact that I don't understand it. I've taken African studies at uni, so I know a wee bit of black culture. Plus, I watch television shows by Tyler Perry. This is coming from an uneducated and immoral white guy who grew up in Detroit and lived a homeless life on the street for the better part of a year. Only difference is I didn't blame other people or bitch about it. Oh yes, those evil terrible awful black populated areas. Heh. All I noted was the lack of proper education and poverty have some pretty drastic affects on the people in these areas, however there are clearly still incredible people that have to reside there as well. |

In all fairness to the officer it was a bit late at night and I was driving on the more 'affluent' side of town. I'm from FL so every time I get pulled over (or at least before they found out I had two lawyers and made friends with the former police commissioner) it's automatically assumed my car is stolen or I'm a dealer because I'm pretty young. Once he realized I was lost he put his weapon away and gave me directions. |

My close friend is a cop here and he told me proper protocol for putting the officer at ease if I get pulled over. It's always unnerving to an officer when anyone reaches for something out of sight. Thus, when I get pulled over, I always roll all of my windows down (they're tinted) and put both hands on the wheel. More than 50% of the time when I reach for my wallet, they will put their hand on their weapon, just in case.
