I agree with the comment that a Fireplace is not the centerpiece of a home. Uesd you are literally gathered around it half the year with family sharing stories and to keep warm.
Otherwise, it's definitely the television that gets more seating time.

FYI, I am definitely not knocking anyone's setup or choice.
I simply shared the article as I do agree with it for most comfortable and best viewing. Especially when you invest a few grand on a TV. That being said, I also completely get it, if your house is not designed in such a way or older which basically eliminates options including a stand. Which is the best solution for a large TV placement do to its viewing height and optimum viewing angles instead of when it's sitting too high.
When we built our current home 4yrs ago, I specifically kept this design feature in mind. Thus our Fireplace has its own wall and the TV (80in) and stand and audio rack, it's own wall. The layout is optimal and they both retain their centerpiece layout respectively.
But yeah, you gotta make due with what you have.
I've been to larger homes than mine, smaller ones and apartments that choose to mount them above the fireplace because either they think it looks better there or because its a fad. Because they definitely have better placement options.

In my case its not because its old, its because, as someone said, builders still build the "hearth" concept. Like said they even built the plumbing in it to make it easier to put the TV up there. I get it though too, its basically taking the place of the painting that would have previously been above the fireplace.

Other than optimal viewing angles its fine. And not really viewing angles because good mounts articulate. I don't buy the heat/smoke thing. I've had both wood and gas ones and never had a TV have an issue because of it. It never got that hot ABOVE my fireplace, the stuff that is going up is going out the chimney/flu. The real heat is radiation, which comes out the front.

Youre fine if you do, youre fine if you dont. No wrong answers. For me its mainly a matter of convenience. The fireplace is largely wasted space in my house (Atlanta, so its only really ambiance) so instead of wasting more space on the tv stand/cabinet I have it up there (although bottom is only about 5ft off the ground).

Now, the one in the master, that one is mounted at optimal height, just above the mattress so fully visible. But then again its all just empty walls save for a couple of windows.

Funny you say that... I know someone that put a short throw projector above their fireplace. Turns out the ceiling does get quite hot and you cannot use both at the same time.

It does look nicer though IMO, not a big fan of the black rectangle.

I don't have a fireplace but the TV is certainly not the focal point of our room.

Nicely setup on both accounts. What's the screen size in basement? I chose to go for absolute maximum screen size in my Theater: 135in. It is immersive to say the least.

Two households of in-laws have them hung above the fireplace. Idiocy. They are decent people, just not in the television mounting department.

Thanks. The basement TV is 77". I was debating between getting a projector and going big or just getting a TV. Ended up settling on an OLED TV for the picture quality

I think both of these are great placements.

Like most opinion pieces, I feel like this was a piece written out of frustration after having an argument with someone about their TV placement. It all comes down to your floorplan and fireplace type and size. Have a huge fireplace or an open wood burning one? Maybe a TV above it isn't the best placement. Have a small fireplace? Then the height may be just fine for a TV. Regarding heat, if your fireplace is building enough heat through your wall to damage your TV, then you have a poorly designed and potentially dangerous fireplace an exhaust. If you have enough heat rising from your fireplace to damage your TV, then you probably shouldn't have anything on your mantel either. If designed and vented properly then heat shouldn't be an issue.

I had my TV above the fireplace in one of my rooms, but there was literally no other wall to put it on. It was a corner fireplace, 2 walls were all windows, one wall was doorways, and the final wall was the only wall that you could place seating. Above the fireplace it was. But it didn't feel too high and the fireplace was never used.

I also hate entertainment stands and things cluttering the floor. Anything that takes up space in a room or builds up along the wall is a no-go for me. I also hate cables, so it's wall panels and hidden conduit for me.

LMFAO the threads here lately are comical. One article posits that above the fireplace is not the ideal place to mount a television and it's gospel. In my 36 years on this earth, I have never heard this nor imagined it could evoke such impassioned discourse and strong opinions.

My TV is above the fireplace. The viewing angle is fine, my health is too. Seems like Lennar (largest homebuilder) believes that above the fireplace is where the TV should hang (evidenced by the smart home connection). It's not a safety or fire hazard either.

You have a different design aesthetic? More power to you.

Same as those guys who are debating whether its OK to mow your lawn during the day on a holiday ROFL.

I think a lot of it depends on how much distance you have from the TV, if mounted above the FP mantel, and where you sit to watch TV. In my case the room is narrow so I'd literally being looking up, almost 90 degrees, so it will not work.

Well that is out IN the room and actually on the ceiling where the heat would rise and it sounds like its just enough to trip the projector, which are freaking OVENS anyway. I hated using one in one of our small meeting rooms (LOL remember those) because after like 15 minutes the room would be 80 degrees and the fan on the projector would drown out everyone. Stupid halogens. The newer LED/laser ones are probably much better but nobody spends the $$ to get one with enough lumens.

Mine (tv, not projector) is mounted against the wall right above and that wall never gets hot, not any warmer than the rest of the room. Since its backlight LED doesn't need nearly the output so the TV isnt also generating that much heat.
