Actually, I'd be extremely surprised if we ever see i5 M on the back of a BMW. That model designation would mean nothing to no one. I think we'd probably see a M5i.
With BMW of the past I'd 100% agree, but with BMW of today willy nilly throwing out traditions out the window like they are worthless, i wouldn't be so sure...

Really like what I've seen from the G60 shots so far, reminds me a lot of the E39. The M5 spy shots posted on Autoblog show the charge port. Rear bumper also has an odd kink just behind the back wheel, wonder if that's just the cladding?

This clearly shows the struggle of having one model for gas and electric. All the extra metal that's used to hide the batteries on the BEV directly carries over to the M5 and other ICE 5 Series for part sharing which then look more chunky then they need to. Look at that belly!

I'm actually catching a lot more E60 vibes with the G60, and I miss my E60 to this day so this new 5er definitely interests me. I'm one of those weirdos that never liked the E39, I thought it looked like a bloated turtle and never thought they drove particularly well either (yes I've driven them all, M5 included).

I don't know much, but that body under the striping is still pretty ugly. Are they kidding?

Agreed. While not really the same, I was really surprised when they designated M4 as the coupe and vert and reserved M3 as the sedan only. Seemed like a really odd choice to me.

Should we expect this hybrid engine to be the only engine offered in the M5? I ask this with my last drop of hope

S68 is pretty much guaranteed because BMW currently has absolutely no other suitable internal combustion engines planned.

It's a TEST car, many pieces of the car may be from any parts bin. Car has to have certain thing like mirrors and headlights etc to be street legal. Perhaps this version is testing software or I drive 9, or anything for that matter. I would wait until we are inside a year of release before we get a good look.

Seems promising. I wonder how much more this thing is gonna grow though. The 5-series, in my opinion, has already looked bloated for two generations now. It's gonna keep getting fatter and heavier.

The 3-series was always a smaller option, but even that is long and chunky looking now.

Looking forward to learning more about the power train. V8 plus at least 2 electric motors in the front would be very promising.

While we Bimmer faithful care very much about what powers these cars, the normal, traditional customer does not.

Therefore, once the need to advertise that your "saving the planet" by driving one of these is gone, automakers will just revert to normal names. So while This generation might be M5i, the next will just be battery powered and thus be M5 only.

...and the rears look way too narrow for a top-dog M car. I'm guessing this is more of a 5-series test mule for the M5 powertrain without the chassis modifications.
But rotors are not normal 5 series

I agree that S68 is pretty much guaranteed, but S58 is a plenty suitable option if given sufficient electric power. But yes BMW doesn't seem to be going that route.

The upcoming C63 is going to be a 4-cylinder PHEV, and the next E63 might do the same.

I'm surprised S68 PHEV is able to meet future Euro regulations. Personally, I'd actually prefer an electrified S58 in the M5. It'd help offset some of the weight gain, be plenty powerful, and I'm partial to BMW's I6s.
