I went to the dealership yesterday to discuss finance and delivery details. They had a demo available. Took it for a very short test drive for less than 5 minutes under the watchful eyes of a salesman. The brakes seemed to be good and the interior felt upscale and vastly improved. I was barely driving at 30 mph. I was driving an electrical steering wheel After a long time. It was a big change for me coming from the hydraulic of the ‘15 x1. It was driving a little too smooth and could not feel the gears changing. I think I need to drive it for a longer period of time to have any concrete opinions about the drive.

Took delivery today. Drive wise, it's going to take a little time for me to get used to coming from the E84 and I need to test it out. The exterior and interior are great and the tech was working really well. The touch screen was very responsive. Certain things like climate control are easy to use the touch screen and not a big deal. But the idrive controller will be missed. It's going to take some time to get used to.It got connected to my bmw app pretty easily. There are buttons to move videos on youtube and music forward/backward as well as the volume buttons on the wheel as as on the side. Switching gears was also pretty easy and I have almost gotten used to it by tonight. Switching to sport mode is a little bit of hassle if we need to do this instantly.. We need to press 2 buttons (2 step process -one on the wheel or side and then the touchscreen) and not something that easy if you want to get into a ramp quickly. What I did not like were the sport seats. I would recommend not going for the sport seats if you are going the x-line route. For those going the m route, there is an option now on the build to switch to the standard suspension and reduce $500 off at the build stage itself. I have not had much of a chance to really check out how it handles since I was driving in Friday evening traffic. The ride is quieter than the old X1 probably due to the non RFT's.

are you saying that you can watch YouTube videos on the screen? if so, how does that work?

I also thought the X1's cabin was very quiet.(which was surprising to me, since most of the cars/SUVs in my family over the last 20 years were from Lexus)

Thanks!

The option to delete the Adaptive Suspension was always on the configurator since launch, but listed under options as a standalone item. I personally like a firm and taut suspension, rather than a cushy one. But then again, driving the circumference of the island on a good day takes under 3 hours, my average commute is only 45 minutes, so I don't really have a long drive most of the time. I'm tall and slim, 6' tall and about 175lbs, so as long as the sport seats aren't too snug I imagine I'll be fine.

Can you switch to sport mode by voice command?

not sure about the X1 yet. perhaps new owners can chime in?

If you have intelligent personal assistant as part of I drive 8 there are numerous commands that can be performed by voice control and yes switching to sport mode is one of the options well you can in the UK version

CA told me that we could do that, but I rarely use voice. Will try and let you know. But still we need to press the button and talk - 2 activities 😁

I was seeing google maps via CarPlay and was listening to the audio only (YouTube video) was running in the background. On the phone, when we switch to the maps, YouTube stops playing. I do not have a YouTube premium subscription

You just have to say Hey BMW and say what you want it to do ie change to sport mode .You can rename the assistant to what you want ie Hey X1 change to sport mode. It even works with the passenger as well over time it gets to know your habits with your favourite radio station seat heating temp steering wheel temp and so on Very clever.

rename the assistant so she responds to this wake word?

"Hey Mercedes, switch to sport mode, danke schön"

I got the idea when I was test driving the Mercedes GLB last week. The MBUX system was way too sensitive. Anytime I or the saleswoman said the word "Mercedes", the voice assistant kept responding.(even if we didn't use the word "Hey" in front of "Mercedes") I jokingly said that the wake word should be "Hey BMW" because people rarely say anything about BMW in a Mercedes?

Ok but after the test drive, how often are you saying the make of your car while driving?

Compare it purely to the driving dynamics of the previous one with all the other stuff as an aside. I think you're going to like the x3 more and you'll see what i mean when i say somehow the x3 feels smaller and more agile when driving despite it being bigger. I now have a huge appreciation for the previous X1. What a fun a little, nimble go kart like suv.

I just completed a 500 mile trip to drop off the car and my negative opinion is even more solidified. The touch screen is unbearably awful. Smudges and fingerprints everywhere, so many sub menus and everything needs multiple clicks. If they just added an i-drive knob/dial, it potentially could be tolerable. I missed the simplicity of i-drive 7 with the knob and shortcut buttons so much.

The brakes are absolutely terrible. It really feels unsafe trying to get this thing to stop from highway speeds and even around town. I've never driven a BMW with brakes like this. The seats arent particularly comfortable either and my right knee constantly bangs against the hard plastic on the right bottom dash area.

And of course, it is not fun to drive in the least. Feels unbelievably large and just feels sloppy all around. You're right-that big bulging hood doesn't help at all. A VW taos i test drive a few months back was even much more fun. What good is all the tech and nice, new modern premium interior if the car is a hassle to navigate around town.

Even my older parents weren't impressed with it. The only redeeming factor was i managed 36mpg during the entire trip. If this is the direction BMW is going in, it may be time to look elsewhere. I'm glad to be done with it.
Shoot, OK. Glad I came across this thread.

I just posted about potentially passing on an X3 M40i and waiting to see what the X1 M35i would be like (new tech and interior being a large part of the reasoning).

While I imagine the M35i model won't drive like a floaty boat, it sounds like everything I love about my 2020 X1 28i M Sport would only be enhanced in the X3 M40i and potentially lost in this current gen X1
